It might seem odd to review a piece of metal with threaded holes in it, but I bought this Gauge because of its white-against-black markings. It is identical to a gauge I already have but its markings are readable.
It is also a fine gauge. Somehow, the paint/whatever that coats the Gauge does not reduce its precision (standard screws fit precisely in its threaded holes). And, it's priced right.

This is one of those tools that is so helpful and saves so much time. I can't even count the times I have gone looking for some screw or bolt and not knowing the thread size wasted time trying different screws. This particular gauge is heavy and thick enough to support enough threads so you don't get false readings on the screw you are testing. Everyone should have one of these...

The Empire screw guage is a helpful aid when sizing screws. I found that it saved time going through piles of screws trying to find the one you need. I would recommend to buy.

This is a sturdy and very useful tool if you have a lot of machine screws or bolts you need to sort by thread size. I find it faster and more reliable that using a thread pitch gauge or any of the other "bolt sizer" tools I have. The gauge covers a good range of NC and NF thread sizes but you need something else if you want to size metric screws.
An obvious downside is that it can't directly size nuts or threaded holes -- you first have to find a screw that fits the female-threaded item and then size it with the gauge. The item shipped did not match the photo. The rarely-used NS (National Special) thread sizes shown in the photo are not included on the gauge I received.

Nice compact little guage that is easy to put in tool drawer, tool box, or on the shelf. Time saver when trying to match threaded hardware.

This is a product costing a little over [...] bucks that will save you at least $1000 in headache remedies. The Empire SAE gauge is the first real quality gauge of this type I have bought. It's now the only one I own: I didn't even kiss the cheap, thin plastic one goodbye--straight to the trash. If, like me you're not the sharpest tool in the box, but then not quite the dullest one either, you might find the i.d. layout a little confusing at first. Actually, it's impressive how Empire squeezed so much information and function on to this little 3 x 5 steel card. Get one.

With this threaded little piece of gadgetry I can determine size and pitch of any screw or small bolt. I absolutely love it, and it has saved me from damaging both tapped holes and screws. The only negative thing about it, is that due to its newness, some screws won't go in without a driver, even if it's the correct pitch and size you're trying to fit into the tappered hole. It's sturdy and well-built. I recommend it to any serious professional or handyman who likes to do things well and not force or damage things so as to get a poorly job done quickly and out of the way, like most do here in Mexico, I'm sorry to say. I was skeptical at first. I thought it expensive for a little piece of metal. It's worth every penny, and I'd buy another one just like it in a heartbeat. I don't own the Standard Thread Detective Screw Thread Gauge, but I bet this little fella is better than carrying a bunch of tapped and marked screws around; although each has its pros and cons. With this latter detective, you can see what screw fits what tap without the need for purchasing any screw for trial and error.
