A: When your drywall square is an Empire 418-48! I do a fair amount of flat work, and found that using a drywall square for measuring plywood cut my measuring time in half. But tonight, HALFWAY through my cut sheet, something just didn't seem right. After a couple cross checks with other steel rulers, I discovered that this thing was off by about 3/64 of an inch (a hair under 1/16) Some of you will think I am nuts for caring about that, others will TOTALLY relate. I'm not framing up walls here, I'm trying to do some (reasonably) fine woodworking. What really got me was that I was HALFWAY done cutting my pieces when I found this out. What do I do: start cutting with accurate measurements, or plow ahead with everything 1/16" short, and hope for the best?

After my blood quit boiling, I looked at the square to see who made it. Empire Level Mfg Corp, Mukwonago WI. Hmmm...American company making s***? Doesn't seem right. Flipped it over to reveal: MADE IN CHINA. I guess when they moved from WI to China they didn't replace the QC/QA department; cost too much apparently. Much better for stockholders this way- those damn union thugs were killing them, right? What with their health care, living wages, and 48" EVEN squares. But I digress.

This thing is s***; don't buy it, unless you really don't care how your project turns out.

The T-Square arrived several degrees off-square, counter-clockwise. The rivets actually looked to have been punched incorrectly, and tapping it didn't rotate it at all... so, if you were to get one square, it'd probably stay that way alright. So, at least there's that.

What good is a square that is not square? No good at all. This product arrived defective. The top was riveted at an 85 degree angle to the bar. Exceptionally poor quality. Avoid.

I purchased this item for some upcoming home remodel projects. When I went to finally use this product (nearly 3 months after I purchased it) I hung it on the side of a sheet of drywall to cut. My cut was close enough to the edge of the drywall sheet that I noticed with my naked eyes that the square wasn't actually cutting square at all. I laid a protractor on the drywall square at it was more than 10 degrees off. The rivets were tight with no play allowed where the 2 pieces joined together. I am glad I didn't make any cuts with this before I noticed it. Please check yours is square before you make your first cut with it.

Bought mine at the big orange box. This thing is worthless. Not only is it not square (mine is off 7 degrees) but it is incorrectly marked on both rules. Long rule is almost 1/8" short. "T" side markings are not true length; all are short. I didn't think I would have to check the tool for true and square b4 I bought it. I guess I'll disassemble the thing and try to make a couple of straight edges from it.
