About Empire Level
The history of Empire is synonomous with the modern level itself. Henry Ziemann, a master carpenter, founded the Empire Level Manufacturing Corporation in 1919 by inventing the first level with replaceable bubble vials. Ziemann's son Harry was responsible for developing the torpedo level. When pharmacist Donald Wright married into the business in 1953, even he probably could not have foreseen that he would continue this tradition of innovation, patenting the first permanently embedded single-bubble vial, an innovation that would forever change the way levels were built, and later introducing the magnetic level, the top-reading level, the first all-plastic level, and the grade lines on bubble levels for reading pitch angles.

Empire now holds 30 patents and claims more improvements to this simple yet essential tool than any other manufacturer.

Today Empire Level is the leading designer and producer of levels, squares, layout tools and caution tape in the United States with dominant market share in the retail, contractor supply, and "Do-It-Yourself" markets.

I got this for him for his birthday (thank you all who left your detailed reviews, it helped me decide to get this one) - he loves that it is so precise, as well as being very well made with magnets which work well with metal items that need to be balanced. He recommends it highly and getting any kind of praise out of him usually requires that all the planets be in perfect alignment, etc., etc. :-)

I've been using a level that was dropped, a bit bent and old enough to have been used, unfortunately, in Pisa. So, when I started equipping my New shop today, I broke out my new level to install a workbench. This time, my workbench would be level! Wow, what a beautiful, impressive, massive, sturdy and precise instrument. It even looks good! I have also promised myself to stop buying economy tools that look like they should do the trick. This level is expensive and worth every euro. I just wish it came in metric. Can't have everything, I guess.
Advice: buy it.

Man, this is one pretty tool! I bought it for my son last Christmas and wish I had bought two of them (but I know where he lives and have a garage key so I'm OK). There's not much to say about a level but the workmanship and appearance of this tool is first rate all the way. My son is putting in new kitchen cabinets this spring and I will undoubtedly end up in the midst of that job so I figured I'd buy "us" the best. Wonderful level.
