This is ridiculous,
This review is from: THE EMPIRE OF RUSSIA (Kindle Edition)
Okay. I consider pretty generous when it comes to reviewing history books, and I knew the Abbott brothers have an Imperialist Christian slant, so maybe I should have seem this coming. But I swear I was not expecting a sanctification of Ivan The Terrible.
Here is the gist of the book: Any people who are not governed by a mighty dictator are "barbarians" living in a state of "anarchy" and "lawlessness". A Christian Autocrat should conquer them. If they don't appreciate being conquered and slaughtered, it's because they are bigoted against Christiaity. Ivan the Terrible was a good ruler, and a devout Christian who cared deeply for his subjects. He did some bad stuff, but then he found God and changed his ways. It's true that he beat his son to death a few years later, but that was an accient, and besides he was under stress. Let's overlook the fact that two days earlier, he beat his daughter-in-law into miscarriage. That's not worth mentioning. I'd be curious to read what the Abbott Brothers have to say about Caligula. |
