Among my personal artifacts is a sterling silver bell rattle with a small loop attached. It has my name and the date and hour of my birth etched on it. I could never figure out what it's purpose was until I was new ones with a plastic teething ring that went through the silver loop at the top of the bell. I suppose my own got chewed through, broken and discarded, leaving only the silver part. So now I am a grandparent, I found a very similar bell, teething ring and took it to my local engraver at the oldest jewelry store in San Francisco where they engraved it to order for me at a price far more reasonable than the chain stores at suburban malls who couldn't figure out how to fit the object into their machine for some kind of computer programed etching. Next stop will be a silver mug with her name engraved on it for her first birthday.
