Editorial Reviews

With the release of the 11th studio album Empire Of The Undead, Gamma Ray finally reclaims the throne on the world stage of classic Power Metal.

The loyalty of Gamma Ray and Kai Hansen worldwide is unique. Two EPs ('Skeletons And Majesties' and 'Master Of Confusion') and a live CD/DVD ('Skeletons And Majesties LIVE') only made the demand for new material louder.
Following a world tour with Helloween, the band has been working on the new album for more than a year with producer and friend Eike Freese (who recently mixed the live album 'The NOW What?! Live Tapes' included in the recent # 1 album by Deep Purple). At the end of 2013, while on tour, Gamma Ray saw themselves confronted with the misfortune of having their Hamburg studio destroyed by a fire-stroke. However, the band responded to this tragic event by doing what they have always been best at: 'Life is too good to stop and moan' claims front man Kai Hansen and therefore quickly adds 'No one can stop us'. This message can most definitely be transferred to the new album as the title track of the record already proved Gamma Ray s sound is once again unstoppable and puts an irresistible heavy and fast approach to their classic sound.

Along with the release of Empire Of The Undead, the band will hit the road on a European spring tour that will certainly provide evidence once again for Gamma Ray's status quo of being one of the most important Power Metal bands.

It also has great vocals and riffs, both in a heavy and melodic way.

I am gave them 4 stars because we cant get 3.5, and I didn't think they deserved 4, because the songs that shine are really inspiring and have major replay value.

Gamma Ray have got to be one of the most underrated/overlooked power metal bands in existence. Although influenced by the usual array of classic metal bands, including Iron Maiden and Judas Priest, G.R. distinguish themselves from the rest of the herd in that they solo better than most any other traditional metal group formed in the Eighties (meaning yes, they beat out the Iced Earth, Dio, Eighties-era Pantera, et al.) But even so, they are so unfairly underrated because, despite being one of the most prominent bands in the German heavy music scene, they all-too often get overshadowed by the likes of Helloween (a group from which they have roots in), Accept, and Blind Guardian. Well, that should definitely not be the case anymore, because with this, their eleventh album, they prove that they should be ranked right up there with the best of power metallers.

Gamma prove their worth by supplying excellent instrumental skills, sizeable vocal chops, and exceptional songwriting prowess all throughout 2014's "Empire Of The Undead." It opens with a very strong and memorable, nine-and-a-half-minute long epic in "Avalon," which evokes classic Maiden, as it boasts a catchy, galloping beat, Bruce Dickinson-indebted singing, and crunchy guitar licks. And it is rounded out by some piercing, white hot melodic solo flights, too. The blistering "Hellbent" comes next, and it hits the ground running with whooshing, chainsaw-fast guitar leads that echo pure, classic thrash/speed metal. But after that, the album briefly settles back down into more restrained territory, with "Pale Rider" being an uber-crunchy, industrial-strength chugger that bubbles over with exceptional soloing and borderline anthemic, fist-pumping choruses.

I will start by saying that I had heard of Gamma Ray, but never fully gave them a listen. I was looking for some new/old metal to check out that I had not heard yet and was googling best metal albums of 2014 and of all time when I cam e across this listed twice. Knowing that I had always wanted to check out Gamma Ray, I went ahead and ordered their newest release 'Empire of the Undead'..

I really wasn't expecting much, as my tastes are pretty set with the power/thrash Iced Earth style of metal. Boy was I wrong! I got what is perhaps one of my top ten metal albums of all time.

The first song 'Avalon' is an instant epic along the lines of 'Rime of the Ancient Mariner.' Just a song I cannot get enough of with its fantastic melody, lyrics and temp changes. It also has great vocals and riffs, both in a heavy and melodic way.Instantly one of my favorite songs of all time and I am extremely picky.

The rest of the album is awesome, there are no weak links. The only problem is I always want to keep playing 'Avalon' over and over.

If you are even looking at this, buy the album. There is no way you will be disappointed, it is a metal classic.

Even though it may upset some of the fans who want the same sounding material everytime, Many of the great bands are willing to change their material out of respect for their fans to not insult them by effectively showing contempt for their fans by giving them the same thing except with different titles, lyrics and maybe a few different tempos.

Uriah Heep is a great example of this who changed their material despite complaints of some fans wanting Demons and Wizards part 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9........ with different tiles. As a result, UH has produced some of the best quality material post D&W.

Gamma Ray should consider this and the song Avalon is a great example of a direction to go into.

That said, this recording is in the same league as their classic material in the late 90's/early 00's, thus deserving 4 stars even if the sound has not changed dramatically.

Just hope they do so, so Empire of the Undead will not be unique especially since some of their recent previous recordings have were effectively sub par part 2, 3, 4 ... of their classic recordings

This is the second Gamma Ray album that I picked up and I think it has some awesome moments but feel as though they could have done better. I am gave them 4 stars because we cant get 3.5, and I didn't think they deserved 4, because the songs that shine are really inspiring and have major replay value. Songs like "Avalon, and "Empire of The Undead," "I Will Return is Gamma Ray with all engines firing. The riffs on the album are great when they aren't going back to typical power metal. When they fuse thrash elements into their sound, their best moments shine through like in "Pale Rider."

This rocks all the way through. Heavy but very musical. I can't get "Pale Rider" out of my head (which really isn't a bad thing!). Kai & the boys have taken their music to the next level. Buy this!! You won't be sorry!
