This review is from: War for Empire in Western Pennsylvania (Paperback)
This interesting book covers the often-forgotten pre-Revolutionary period of American history, specifically in the region of western Pennsylvania, from the years 1753-1763. Within this time period, there were several battles and skirmishes, first between the French/Native American forces and the English/American ones, and later, after the French had been defeated, the Native Americans alone against the combined English and Americans. This later war came to be known as "Pontiac's Rebellion" and was one of the first major unified Native American uprisings in America.
The book does a good job of setting the stage for the coming conflicts and the chapters that follow are put together in a logical fashion, linking the local events in a continuous chain. Also interspersed throughout the book are informative mini-sections that add detail to the story being told (one example is a short history of the Seven Years War being fought in Europe at the same time). I found these "extra" sections, along with the many maps, photos and portraits, gave an added (and appreciated) flavor to the book. It's not just page after page of text; the reader will see portraits of many of the main figures, maps of regions, roads and battles, pictures of landmarks and period artifacts, etc. All of these added to the general enjoyment and understanding of the story being told.
As the title suggests, this book tells the specific history of these battles in western Pennsylvania, so the reader should be aware that it does not chronicle the entire record of either war ("French and Indian" or "Pontiac's Rebellion") in its entirety; for that, you'll need to look elsewhere. If you are looking for specific details of the wars in this region, however, you'll probably not find many better options. And at barely 80 pages, the book can easily be read in a short time. Four stars!

A National Park Service Style Guidebook, August 2, 1999
This review is from: War for Empire in Western Pennsylvania (Paperback)
This 83 page book is loaded with color and b/w photos, artifacts, maps, drawings, sketches, paintings which center on the struggle by the British, French, provincials, settlers, and the Native Americans for control of the forks of the Ohio River. It is written so school children could grasp the hows and whys of the struggle, as well as adults. Additional books of similar interest and four historic sites are listed at the back of the book. If there is a fault with this book, it must be that it relies heavily on English sources and has an Anglo-centric outlook.
