This book, filling an editorial gap, provides a comprehensive treatment of the emplacement mechanisms of nappes and thrust sheets. In the first chapter the basic concepts of thrusting are explained and a short overview of thrust geometry is presented. In chapter 2 the problem of the emplacement of nappes is discussed in its historical framework. The mechanical and kinematical models of nappe emplacement are presented in chapters 3 and 4. In the final chapter a number of examples from the Alpine chain is analyzed. Audience: This volume can be considered as a reference work of the utmost value for Earth scientists in general and can be used as a graduate text for courses addressing displacement geology.
