This review is from: To Empower People: From State to Civil Society (Hardcover)
"To Empower People" by Berger and Newhaus I found useful in my quest as a conservative to understand the basics of what it takes to slow and eventually turn back the ever growing government.
This book goes to the heart of the matter. Yes they say it is possible, then they show how we do it. We need to make it personal; we need to put in place alternatives to government handouts. They then remind us that this takes not only a change of attitude on our part but a willingness to put in a lot of work and time. The book is well reasoned and written. The arguements are sound. The assumption is however that we are willing to put in that time and effort as citizens and manage the process ourselves with an intimate local focus rather than just writing a check. Do we have that focus and willingness? The book was done in 1995. Times and attitudes seem to be changing since then, there seems to be a vacuum looking to be filled with any workable solutions outside Big Government. Well time will tell if we are up to it.
