1.0 out of 5 stars Hogwash
I was so disappointed with this book. I expected something more concrete, complex and helpful. The author used to read faces at parties as a paid party entertainer, for godssake. I read it and tried all of the exercises, and to get anything out of it you have to be one of those New-Age-suspension-of-reason types. It is simplistic and unhelpful. Someone with a more...

Rose Rosetree has written a survival manual for the empath.

People who feel other people's experience, who cannot help it, bounce through life like a pingpong ball. The mood of the last person you met determines how you feel.

First Rose Rosetree reassures you that you are not crazy. Then she tells you how to get control over the incoming feelings. When you finally have some space of your own, she helps you to use your empathy to help others.

*Empowered by Empathy* is that rare book that delivers what it promises. I recommend it.

If you are sensitive to the moods and feelings of others, do yourself a big favor and read this book! Empathic sensitivity (that is, pulling in emotional energy from people around you and experiencing it as your own) can be a big source of confusion and frustration. But Rose Rosetree helps you understand empathy as the GIFT it truly is. This book is all about learning to manage empathic sensitivity by using it with awareness and grace. When you learn how to turn empathy on and off, it becomes a choice instead of an uncontrolled experience. And when you do choose to "join in spirit" with another person in a skilled, balanced way, your consciousness expands and soars! You get to step outside the box of your own experience and explore the delicious "otherness" of someone else's consciousness, then return safely to a grounded sense of yourself. Rosetree defines numerous categories of empathy, including several that never would have occurred to me. I've always imagined empathy to be an exclusively EMOTIONAL connection. Who knew that a talent for getting in sync with another's THOUGHT process could be a kind of intellectual empathy? There are insights galore here. One of the things I like best about Rosetree's books in her use of Q&A sections. This gives her books an "interactive" feel that I really appreciate. It's the closest thing to a live workshop you can get in book form. If you know, or suspect, that you are a natural empath, don't pass this one up; it could be life-changing.

5.0 out of 5 stars Empaths Defined, August 24, 2005
This review is from: Empowered by Empathy : 25 Ways to Fly in Spirit (Paperback)
If you have ever asked yourself questions such as `Why do I care so much?'; you will thank yourself for reading this book. With clarity and insight, Rose delves in to give specifics about the 20% who relate to others on a deeper level.
If you are merely interested, you will learn a lot. If you are empathic, you will understand your gifts more fully and gain needed skills to be more effective in all areas of your life. This book is a breath of fresh air for anyone who has ever pondered the nature vs. nurture theories to explain their own unique abilities to connect with others.

5.0 out of 5 stars New Possibilities, February 7, 2005
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Empowered by Empathy : 25 Ways to Fly in Spirit (Paperback)
As a sometimes college math teacher, I am seldom accused of having empathy (particularly just after a final exam). So, I began reading the book just to see what life might be like for other people, those who did have some empathy. Perhaps it would be a bit like Darth Vader reading about Obi Wan, just to check out the competition. To my surprise (and a little consternation), I discovered that it is quite possible that I have some empathic attributes myself. Who would guess?

Many books indeed are really written quite selfishly. So many are written to show the author to be a talented or clever person. Those books are really written for the author, and there are very many of them indeed in the psychology/spirituality/self-help area. Very few are there to help the reader improve his own life. This book seems to me to be written quite unselfishly, with the purpose of helping the reader to uncover new possibilities in his own life. In that way, it can be regarded as a practical and helpful book and one that serves in its way to build up civilization. I like to play Tai Chi. The worst insult you can give to a Tai Chi player is to tell him that his practice is "talking Chi Kung". That is, all talk, no show. This is a real book and not just talk.

5.0 out of 5 stars This book is a life saver!, April 8, 2003

This review is from: Empowered by Empathy : 25 Ways to Fly in Spirit (Paperback)
Have you ever been in a good mood only to blow up at your spouse or child the moment they walked in the door after not seeing them all day; then blame yourself for the way you've acted? Have you ever driven past another car and gotten an instant headache? If you've experienced any similar circumstances, you need to read this book. The author will tell to you that you are normal...for being an empath. She will explain in very easy to understand terms why you feel and act the way you do and how to get relief from feeling like you may be crazy. Her terms like Emotional Oneness and Physical Oneness will help you understand yourself and how and why you do seemingly strange things and act strange ways. She explains the various kinds of empaths in such a way that you can pinpoint yourself through her text. You will learn how to control your wonderful gifts for understanding and helping mankind while making your life so much more comfortable. The way she writes makes you feel like she's sitting in front of you and personally teaching you about yourself as if she was you! Thank you Rose!!!!

5.0 out of 5 stars Change Your Life Forever, August 18, 2004
This review is from: Empowered by Empathy : 25 Ways to Fly in Spirit (Paperback)
Having a special skill is typically something we all are too happy to have. However, empathy is not one of those skills, unless you have a good book like "Empowered by Empathy" which decodes the hidden language needed to make empathy a gift. Until I read, Empowered by Empathy, and started to use the techniques in the book, I considered my empathy a hinderance. After reading this book, I now have control of my gift rather than empathy controlling me. As a result, I now feel I can see the world from a very unique perspective. Thank you, Rose.

I loved this book! It helped me to be aware of how I was taking in the emotional energy of others, and how to prevent that. It helped me to see how to be there for others with more compassion and less giving from my own energy. I highly recommend it for therapists, body workers and others who work closely and intimately with people.

Rose Rosetree's "Empowered By Empathy" has literally been a life saver for me! I have known for years that I am an empath, but was not very skilled. Rose's book has helped me be grateful for being an empath instead of miserable.
It is written with Rose's unique brand of humor and passion.
The exercises in it are easy to do and to remember. This is the ONLY book of it's kind that addresses the different ways of being empathic. The book focuses on empathic gifts as a way to be in service to others while being able to appropriately care for oneself. Her novel, "Roar of the Huntids", chronicles the experiences of a young woman in the not so far off future who awakens to and learns how to use her empathic gifts. I can't thank Rose enough for the information she has brought into my life!
