About the Author

Tavis has authored several books, including Keeping the Faith: Stories of Love, Courage, Healing and Hope from Black America, ISBN: 0385505140; Empowerment Cards, ISBN: 1401901271, 30,000 sold; and On Air, ISBN: 1401902243. Tavis is the founder of the Tavis Smiley Foundation, a nonprofit organization, whose mission is to encourage, empower, and enlighten black youth. Youth to Leaders (Y2L), the cornerstone program of the Foundation, is an annual series of one-day leadership-building conferences that takes place in cities across the U.S. Tavis Smiley Presents, a subsidiary of The Smiley Group, Inc., was created to bring ideas and people together through symposiums, seminars, forums, and townhall meetings. One of ten children, Tavis is single and lives in Los Angeles. In his spare time, he enjoys a good game of Scrabble with friends.

I bought these cards to give to my college students as inspiration about improving their communication. Before I had a chance, my college son saw them and asked if he could have the set of cards. So, I bought a second set to give to students. The first day of a graduate course in communication, one of my students had a set of the cards she passed out to people in the class.

The cards make excellent gifts to give family, friends, or co-workers. You can tuck one inside a note card, which prompted a nice response from a student of mine stationed in Iraq. Each card is a different piece of artwork, and they have an array of motivational quotes. You'll be able to find just the right card to give to the person you have in mind, and you'll want to keep some to inspire yourself.

My husband and daughters change the message each day. The pictures are colorful and the messsage is positive. It sits a top our piano and reminds us each day to inspire!
