About the Author

GILBERT MORRIS has written numerous novels for both adults and young people. After teaching high school, pastoring several Southern Baptist churches, and chairing the English department at Ouachita Baptist University, Gilbert retired to write and publish full-time. He has written more than 200 novels, including the Seven Sleepers series for youth. He lives in Gulf Shores, Alabama, with his wife, Johnnie.

This was an extremely enjoyable book. I am a twenty-something and I was enthralled....I had to read it before I gave it to my young sister as a gift....I wanted to be sure that it was a good book. I certainly did not want to give her something that did not represent the values that we have. The young girl Abbey rebels against going on the next mission with the sleepers, she is very vain and wants to stay away so that she can improve her appearance. There is a slight romance in the friendship between two of the characters -- however it is quite pure and fun -- conducted in a manner that shows mutual respect and shared beliefs, a very important thing to represent in this day in age. Although, I must admit that it may be my sense of romance that finds this. Anyways, the real point of the book is Abbey overcoming her vanity. She becomes a slave to the empress who has brainwashed her. This causes her to think that the empress is showing her "the truth" which is (as always when The Adversary is involved)a monumental lie. Only when the true prince of the underground society reminds her of the horror she saw when she first came causes her to come back to reality and find "Goel" in her life..... The rest....aah...the rest is for you to figure out... I would never give the ending completely away. I wanted this to be an outline of the important parts...not a plot summary....I may have failed! :)

This book is a real thriller! It keeps you on the edge of your seat and you just want to keep turning the page. This is a must have book. This book tells the story of how Abbey is lead to the underworld and begins to trust the Empress and fear the underlings unknowing of what's really in store for her.

You know, C.S. Lewis really wrote a memorable series when he penned the Chronicles of Narnia. Clearly Gilbert Morris thinks the same thing. His admiration of C.S. Lewis is so ardent that he's created a massive homage to "The Silver Chair." The time and energy that could have been spent writing an original storyline are instead devoted to recreating Lewis' story of an evil empress with mind control powers. A shame he didn't go far enough with his ripoff to include Puddleglum, but I suppose writing a character that entertaining is beyond the feeble skills of such a hack.
