Editorial Reviews

Product Description

"Let's talk about becoming fragile, when hearing music can leave your body shaking and fingers twitching across goose pimpled skin. Or when the sound and tones don't leave your head. Beautiful, yes, but not in the right direction of healing. Empty, damaging, yet it's still beautiful... This Empress LP may be my favorite record of the year. It calls to mind the sparseness of Low and mysteriousness of Movietone, a little more lo-fi with the absolutely breathtaking and heartachingly fragile voice of Nicola... If you aren't shivering by the time Nicola sings "don't give up on me..." well, then the world is a prerfect place and there is no unhappiness." Kickbright, 1999.

A perfect embodiment of the philosophy that less is more. This is nocturnal music, best appreciated in the small hours. -- Forced Exposure, 2000

Knitting the straggled echoes of loss and sadness into beautiful fragments... -- Konketsu, 2000

Sparse music that's unsettling and beautiful... -- Opus, 2000

Format: Audio CD
This is an incredible disc by a band who truly knows how to write a beautiful song (or 20+ for that matter). Empress' Self-Titled album features incredibly slow yet intricate lo-fi rock in the vein of slowcore legends, Low but with quiet, delicate female vocals. While the songs are incredibly slow and brooding, they are ironically very short with most hovering around the 2-minute mark. Luckily, because of this there are over 20 songs for listeners to enjoy. While at times a few songs feel like unfinished bedroom projects because of this, the vast majority are fleshed out in their brief running time and can only be considered miniature slowcore masterpieces. All in all, Empress is a band who truly finds beauty in sadness and introspection in loneliness.

Love this gal. I can't wait for her to put out a full length. I've listened to this EP 1000 times since it came out

I found Empress Of's Hat Trick from one of my Pandora stations. When I first heard it I was so hooked that I couldn't wait to hear it again. This got me to buy this album as well as her last two song album Champagne. The music style reminds me of a artists like Cocteau Twins or Lush. Really beautiful female voices and artistic sounds.
