4.0 out of 5 stars I was surprised., February 1, 2010

This review is from: Emptiness (Audio CD)
Alesana has always been one of those bands that found their way on to a burned CD of mine, but only a song or two. I would typically get bored with that song very quickly, forget about the band, and i would never care enough to buy a CD of theirs, but with this release, that's changed.
I was at hot topic one day and just for the hell of it, i decided to see if they had a decent song on this one.
To my surprise... the first 4 songs i clicked on i absolutely loved, this entire CD is very, VERY good. I giant improvement from the previous releases by them. I don't have time to get in to everything i love about this CD, but i will say it's definitely, FINALLY a CD by them that's well worth the money.

My favorites songs...
1. Hymn For The Shameless
2. Curse Of The Virgin Canvas
3. The Murderer
4. The Thespian

Really, check them out!! Very good.

5.0 out of 5 stars Not Your Average Screamo, March 5, 2010

This review is from: Emptiness (Audio CD)
This album is absolutely incredible! It has the potential to be the best screamo album of 2010. In my opinion, it is Alesana's best album to date. I own all of their albums, but none of them have surprised me quite like The Emptiness. It has energy, passion, epicness, heaviness, melody, and complexity. How could you ask for anything else? It stands out from their other albums because of the reasons I just mentioned and it shows how much they've matured in such a short period of time. Their other albums seemed to be missing something; that "it" factor. The Emptiness definitely has "it", and there is a never a dull moment to be heard. The screams are brutal (more growls), riffs are complex, drums are loud, choruses are catchy, and no more poppy bass lines. There is even a solo and breakdown here and there. This is a real screamo album, not some pop/punk screaming concoction. This is a key defining feature of the Emptiness as opposed to the other Alesana albums. Besides the music, the story behind the album is intriguing. This is definitely a concept album. The songs are seen through the eyes of a man who has suffered the tragedy of the woman he loved being murdered. The songs explain all of the emotions he is feeling, and Alesana does a great job to make it feel real. Between songs, there are little interludes that help explain the storyline even more. With that, this album feels a little darker than their others. Along with the interludes, the hard copy has 2 booklets; one with lyrics and the other is actually the short story behind the album. Overall, the music sounds amazing and the concept is ingenious. Whether an Alesana or just a general screamo fan, this album is a must have.

5.0 out of 5 stars AWESOME!, June 21, 2011

This CD has more than you pay for in it. You get poetry with lyrics and music. Also the art work inside the cover is fantastic! I am very glad that I decided to go with this album and not the older stuff. Although the older stuff isn't disappointing either. Plus on Amazon you can listen to clips of each song to see if this is the CD you want or not so it definetly helped me decide to buy this one.

5.0 out of 5 stars Brilliant., April 2, 2011

I never liked screamo, so the first time I listened to this album I wasn't impressed. It wasn't till I heard Shawn Milke singing 'I handed you a knife and my heart, and now the dream is over' at the end of Annabel that made me realize the true beauty in what I was hearing. After falling desperately in love with the song Annabel, I began noticing how melodic all of the songs are on this album. Not only are the storyline and lyrics brilliant, the sound is heart-warming and heart-breaking and beautiful. I would definitely suggest this album to anyone who appreciates music. I credit Alesana for opening me up to a different genre of music. Keep listening and you will discover something truly special.

5.0 out of 5 stars The Emptiness Blows Me Away!, December 5, 2010

This review is from: Emptiness (Audio CD)
Hands down, The Emptiness is the GREATEST CD I have ever listened to. Each song tells a chapter of the ten chapter story (and the epilogue) that comes with the CD. It is about a sketch artist at the turn of the 19th century. It was written very well and is probably the best short story I have ever read. On the CD, the vocals are better than ever, the music is better than ever, and the writing is better than ever. Alesana really put a lot of work into this album, and their true talent shows through in this CD. It is a MUST BUY!

5.0 out of 5 stars Their best album yet, June 3, 2010

I liked 'On Frail Wings...', and thought 'When Myth Fades...' was a step back, mostly in the vocals department.

But this one, I love. There isn't a bad track on this disc (unless you count an interlude). From beginning to end it's just damn good. There are no tracks on here (again, minus an interlude) that I skip while listening to it.

On 'On Frail Wings' you caught a lot of the high pitched, clean vocals which I loved. However, when 'Myth Fades' came out, the vocalist seemed strained. He tried to hit notes so high that they came out like a whisper and just did not feel right. On this disc though, it's just right. The clean vocals sound completely natural and have that unusually high pitch that I love.

The screaming side of the vocals are pretty much perfectly mixed with the clean. Most of the CD is clean, with a chorus or small part of screaming mixed in to change it up. In some parts, the screaming is dubbed over the clean vocals so you hear the same lyrics, but in the high, and growl at the same time which is done absolutely perfectly here where it's used. It's just an effect that I like to hear and it's never been done as good as it is on this disc.

Musically it's still Alesana, which is a good thing. If you've liked the music on the past albums, or even just like bands that are usually grouped with them, you will like this one. The only disc I've bought in the past year or two that even comes close to being as perfect to my tastes as this is Drop Dead, Gorgeous' "The Hot and the Heavy".

If you like this one, I would suggest checking out that one too. It's more screamy, but it's the main two that have been in my CD player since winter.

5 Stars hands down. Best CD from beginning to end I've heard in a long time.

5.0 out of 5 stars Can't get over it., April 21, 2010

I'm really excited that this band was able to breach that usual sophomore drop-out and successfully complete a third album. I would like to note that this third album has been a blast! It is a little different from their previous CDs, but I think it's way better! Alesana has not only made a third album, but one that improved a lot! Not to say that I disliked the other albums, because I thought they were quite enjoyable, but the concept album is out of this world. The storyline receives top marks, and the music itself is full and haunting. No fillers here which is amazing for a concept album, (If you don't know, most bands can't pull that off, even veterans that have been at the art for a lot longer). This is a must buy!
