Book Description

February 1, 1991 The Contemporary Poetry Series
From a world tilted a fraction off its axis, these poems speak of angels in Maine and Balinese dinners beneath the Kansas prarie moon. Standing at the interval between the real and surreal, the earthly and eternal, much of Sidney Wade's poetry ponders these intervening spaces, where hunger goes unabated and the air stirs with sighs of exquisite longing.

In this collection, language seeks to replicate the world, wresting the soul to all its fluent conjugations--the discourse of insects on the forest floor, the rhetoric of ballroom dancers, the crusty inflections of brushstrokes in an Edward Hopper painting.

5.0 out of 5 stars The Best First Collection of Poems Published This Decade, May 16, 1997
By A Customer
This review is from: Empty Sleeves (The Contemporary Poetry Series) (Paperback)
I have never in my life picked up a collection of poems in a bookstore and could not put it down until I had finished reading it, that is until I encountered this book of poems by Sidney Wade. This book is, quite frankly, stunning. Ms. Wade writes with an elegance and grace that gives one goosebumps. Reading this collection, it is hard to ignore that Ms. Wade is an heir to Wallace Stevens. If there is one first book of poems you need to read, it is this one. I predict we will be seeing much more from Sidney Wade in the future
