I first heard this band's music pretty much where everyone else did, on the "Extreme Days" soundtrack. Their offering ("Loss for Words") made me think of a poppier version of Matchbox 20 or a harder version of (insert Boy Band name here). When I heard their stuff on DC Talk's "Solo" album, though, they caught me. The almost-alternative-but-not-quite sound of "Alibi" was actually intriguing, and lead singer Michael (who the band's named after) showed that laying down the soul over heavy guitar hooks works pretty well, and I gave it a try. (Hey, if it works for Lenny Kravitz...) Seriously, though, this is a very good first effort from these guys, and there are quite a few gems on this CD. Yeah, they sound a lot like Lenny, but the lyrics are awesome and send good vibes and messages. The roads Mike and the boys travel down lyrically really provoke thought and inspiration. They talk about racism ("Tragedy"), temptation ("Empty"), persecution ("Spy"), perseverance ("All You Got") and other issues Christians face today, and send the messages without pushing too hard. One of the best songs on the CD is "Talk About Jesus", which is a unique sort of story about someone who has a hard time believing in the great works of God when he sees nothing but hatred and destruction around him. What makes it unique is that it's told from the non-believer's point of view. Some big talent went into putting this album together, too, with Pete Stewart (former headman of Grammatrain) lending his keyboards and huge writing talent to many of the songs, and even Michael W. Smith himself(!!) making an appearance on piano for the last track ("Unglued"). "Empty" is quite the departure from DC Talk's sound, but it's worth the trip. I hope these guys will get together for another go in the future. I recommend it.

Not Empty On Talent!,

This cd is awesome from start to finish! Michael has the type of voice that I believe could sing absolutely anything and everything and this cd proves it. There is real talent on this disc: Chad Chapin- killer drummer, Lonnie Chapin-solid bass, and Pete Stewart's guitar work is always enjoyable. This is a heartfelt and socially-conscious album. Check out "American Tragedy", "Spy", and "Talk About Jesus". The song "Unglued". written after the death of Michael's father, is one of the most emotional, painful, and beautiful songs I've ever heard. I've yet to be disappointed with any of the "dc" boys' solo stuff. I'm betting this disc won't leave you "Empty".

Great CD!,

This cd is worth the money. The tempo is upbeat (hard rock - without getting out of hand with guitar solos that seem to only want to show off how fast the guitarists fingers can move) and the lyrics thoughtful. If you're a fan of dc Talk (of which Michael Tait is a member) you'll enjoy this cd. Tait's voice is strong as always. Give it a try and you won't be disappointed.

This album has one very important thing going for it. It's very very catchy. The first time through these songs I loved them and as time has passed I still do, for me that's a very good sign, usually if I like something right away it ends up becoming very annoying but this was not the case. A great first solo outing for 1/3 rd of dc talk, great soaring voice, and spiritual content, I like it!

Tait is Rich and Full,

I've been a HUGE DC Talk fan since a friend 'dragged' me to a Jesus Freak tour concert here in Phoenix years ago. DC Talk just came thru town again last month (02/02) and played at a local church. Each played a few cuts off his solo CD and I loved everyone of Taits songs. At the break I bought the CD and have been listening to it ever since. It is one of my all-time favorite CDs, right up there with Boston I. To me, this CD is every bit as rich as the other DC Talk CDs, maybe more so. But that's all relative to the listener. I honestly couldn't believe how good it sounded for being a solo project. Whoever produces these CDs (DC Talk and the solo CDs) does a masterful job of mixing the music. I'm probably a little more biased toward this CD because I grew up with 70s rock music, and this falls right into that genre. Like other reviewers have commented, the words are deep and sharp and interesting. It's fun trying to place yourself into the songwriters head to try and figure out what the message is. And once you figure it out, it's very powerful. Hard driving rock and beautiful ballads lace this CD. Just one week after this last concert, my girlfriend and I had already figured out 'All You Got' and played a live, unplugged version for women prisoners at a ministry gig. Once you hear the words to that song, you'll understand why the place was full of tears when we were done. Many had all heard of DC Talk and Michael Tait when we told them the source of the song. Michael, just look how your passion for music and Jesus is spreading to the hurting and hungry throughout the Kingdom.

It was much cheaper..) I have already listened to it three times all the way through. This is one of the best CDs of the year, not just by a Christian artist, buy by ANY artist. It is a perfect blend of powerful rock, with elements of pop and alternative. Mix that with poignant lyrics about relationships, faith and racism, and "Empty" is sure to satisfy the non-christian music fan as well. The album begins with 'Alibi', an all out rocker that really sets the stage for the album. 'All You got', the current single, softens the tone a bit, only to be charged up once again with 'Spy' and one of my favorites 'Talk About Jesus', a song about what it really means to live and demonstrate a personal relationship with Christ. "When a man leaves his darkness, he follows the SON". How true indeed.Tait is amptly backed by the Chapin brothers and Pete Stewart, who co-produces. However, this is not a Michael Tait "solo" album in any sense. This is a true band with some serious chops. Do your selves a favor and catch the Taitband on the road this Fall with DC Talk. You will not be disappointed!

How can I rate on of the solo projects from dcT. Let's see. From the get go rocking sounds of "Alibi" to the more melow sounds of "Loss 4 Words" to the soft sounds of "Looking For You" and the more heart wrenching tunes such "Unglued" and "Bonded" and "Tell Me Why" and finally from the all motivating and inspiring "All You Got" to anti racists themes such as "American Tragedy" to the thought provoking songs such as "Altars" "Carried Away" and the title cut "Empty" this album will definetly make your Christian CD collection. Just be sure to remind yourself that it is Micheal Tait from dcT that sings the lead vocals of Tait band. Here is the corrected song list: 1. Alibi 2. Loss 4 Words 3. Bonded 4. All You Got 5. Spy 6. Talk About Jesus 7. American Tragedy (NOTE: Parents beware, this song does use the "n" word in it.) 8. Looking 4 You 9. Altars 10. Tell Me Why 11. Carried Away 12. Empty 13. Unglued (Note: At the end of Unglued, there is a bonus music track.)

I have always been a big fan of dctalk, but when it comes to solid rock music, Michael Tait is just as good if not better off without the rest of dct. (no offense to the rest of the band)

This album by Tait has several very good songs. The songs have solid Christian lyrics that are arranged in some very catchy tunes.
'Empty' is the best of the solo projects by the former DC Talkers that I have heard. As always, Michael Tait has a superb voice. In this album it is combined with some great instrumental work, some of which have a rather rocking sound. This is a good CD that I would recommend. |
