Book Description

October 19, 1993
Is there anyone who does not love a garden? Its beauty, its fragrance, its quietness, its glory, its magic? Emyl Jenkins writes, "My garden is my comfort, a sacred place where my spirit is restored, my mind refreshed, and my body rejuvenated." In the garden you can find life's deeper meaning and behold its scheme. Cheerful little surprises are everywhere in every season. You can nurture your soul in the garden as you fall under its magical spell.

Join Emyl Jenkins as she explores the lore, the poetry, and the universal allure of the garden in Emyl Jenkins' Pleasure of the Garden. Come with her through the garden gate, along winding pathways, down country roads, to the grand formal gardens of another time, to the farmers' market, out to the seashore, and up to the mountains to behold gardens that are simple and majestic, quiet and exuberant.

Emyl Jenkins' Pleasures of the Garden appeals to the garden lover in all of us. With her charming and literary style, Emyl paints portraits of gardens in all seasons and for all occasions. Illustrated with more than 250 beautiful full-color photographs, here are chapters on spring and summer gardens, winter and autumn gardens, family gardens, children's gardens, garden ornaments, working women's gardens, and garden celebrations. Emyl shares personal and heartwarming stories that will inspire and delight. She takes you on a trip along the road she traveled as a child to her grandmother's house, stopping to visit various gardens along the way. She attends a traditional May Day celebration. She takes us to a children's garden tea and to a party where the guests play a Victorian parlor flower game.

Emyl Jenkins' Pleasures of the Garden is a book you will read all year-round for inspiration and ideas. Woven throughout the text are Emyl's "Gifts from the Garden," offering ideas for creating special garden crafts that will brighten your home and garden. Learn how to create an herb table, colorful garden lace, fragrant herbal bath waters, or a fruit and flower garland. Each chapter also contains lovely garden quotations from literature and poetry.

Emyl Jenkins' Pleasures of the Garden is a beautiful, nostalgic, and charming book dedicated to all those who love the magic, the timelessness, the comfort, and the spirit of the garden.

More About the Author

As an antiques appraiser, I began writing non-fiction to help people properly identify and value their possessions. But antiques are more than just things. Long ago I learned that, just like the clothes we wear, the things we choose to have around us tell much about us. These days I've turned to fiction with the Sterling Glass mystery series. I write these books because I love antiques, people, and stories. Like my protagonist, Sterling Glass, I live in Virginia, where, at every turn, there's a story waiting to be told.

This review is from: Emyl Jenkins' Pleasures Of The Garden (Hardcover)
Received the book as promised and it met my expectations. It is really more of an essay or narrative than a how-to but since I've read her work before I was neither surprised nor dissappointed.
