Product Description

Product Description

EAP300 is a long-range 802.11n Wireless Indoor Access Point with speeds up to 300Mbps on its high-powered 2.4GHz radio.

From the Manufacturer

EnGenius EAP300 Business Class Indoor High-power Long-range 800mW Wireless-N Access Point/WDS/Repeater with Smoke Detector Housing & 802.3af PoE Support

EnGenius EAP300 & 802.3af PoE Support

EAP300 offers a "smoke detector" look, and is a high-powered (up to 29dBm) wireless-n access point / WDS Bridge / WDS AP / Repeater operates seamlessly in the 2.4GHz frequency spectrum supporting 802.11 b/g/n standard high speed feature. It is the best way to add long range wireless capability to your existing wired network or to add bandwidth to your wireless installation.

EAP300 features high wireless output power and receive sensitivity along with antenna diversity. High output power and high sensitivity extend wireless coverage to reduce the roaming between access points and to provide a reliable wireless connection. It also reduces the total cost of ownership on hardware.

To protect your wireless connectivity, it can encrypt all wireless transmissions through 64/128bits WEP data encryption and also supports WPA/WPA2. The MAC address filtering lets you select exactly which stations should have access to your network. In addition, the user isolation function can protect the private network between client users.

The attractive design, high performance and array of features make the EAP300 a suitable wireless solution for your residence or office.

There are not enough review so this product online, but the few that do exist are very informative.

Firstly, it looks like smoke detector but is about 30% larger in every way. It could pass as a smoke detector if you disable the electric blue lights that come on when it is powered on (the UI can disable any or all of the 3 lights). Mounting it is as easy as mounting a smoke detector - assuming you already have Ethernet run to the ceiling location. I have several of these installed at various client locations and they are running nicely. Combine them with a great router that does QoS and VPN and I can check on the units and manage traffic remotely.

Be sure to buy a real PoE injector when you get this. The design of this unit assumes you will install it to a location that does not have power, so you need to power it from the switching closet.

So why not 5 stars? Engenius designed a great unit with very usable, stable firmware. However, they made a stupid mistake in not giving it a 1Gbps connection since Wireless N is supposed to offer 300Mbps WiFi speeds. This really doesn't make a difference for most internet speeds, but why would you design the bottleneck to be the wired network connection to the switch? Costs difference between Cat5e and Cat6 are negligible and most offices would require you to run a new Ethernet connection to the ceiling location, so what customer are you designing this for that would have a Cat5 cable already hanging from the ceiling in a centralized location good for wireless?

I see that Engenius release an EAP350 with gigabit. Can I trade in my EAP300?

I have had the EAP300 running for a couple of days now and while its setup is a bit annoying (it defaults to 192.168.1.1, which is where my router is), once I set it to have a dynamic IP address it has all worked flawlessly. It is attractive, comes with the power adapter (in case you don't have POE, which I don't) and a mounting ring with drywall screws and anchors. A tip: to factory reset the device, press on the wrench button on the top for more than 10 seconds. (I didn't see this in the documentation but searched online for it.) I had to do this because I set it to a static IP that didn't work before I realized that was silly for a home network and just set it to use DHCP. Keep in mind this is an AP and not a router - perfect for what I wanted but it might confuse some homeowners. The signal strength is FAR higher than my old Buffalo WHR-300HP or my even older D-Link DIR-655. Glad I made the investment. Frankly, for 89 bucks, covering a house with one AP is well worth it.

Love these... We've deployed 6 so far in a hotel wireless system. Easy to setup, looks like a smoke detector (we turn off the activity and link lights and leave on the power light to further add to the 'deception'), and great stats available. The built in POE is awesome and makes installation prep easy since we don't have to run power to each unit.

A wide range of options as far as configuration goes but needs to be restarted on a regular basis otherwise you run into issues. Thankfully you can even set that on a schedule so that solves the stability issues(for the most part)

This WiFi hotspot is excellent. Range and signal strength - at least in my environment - does not compare with any LinkSys/Cisco home products. It must be mounted facing downwards, although I saw excellent signal with having it face upwards. Having it facing upwards I am sure will affect the range however. I installed it on my ceiling (top floor) by running a CAT6 cable through the attic.

The PoE capability requires only a CAT6 installation. However, you need a PoE hub. The charger that comes with it is a plain one (not PoE compatible) and I am not sure if you can use it with a splitter.

Nice option to completely turn all LEDs off, so it does not blink all night long.

Amazingly compact and well designed product with lots of features. Great wireless coverage! The high-power output is great for older buildings with block walls.

We do a lot of network setups. This unit works well (much better than the Ubiquity Unifi units we previously had). These Engenius units aren't pretty, but they work well. We just used them as table top devices (no wall mount necessary). The user interface is a bit unusual, but ... you'll likely find your way ok. It's a relatively feature rich unit for the price. Good coverage. All in all, well worth the money.

I put this in our stairway into the 2nd level of the house (15-25' off the ground) running it POE. I can go anywhere on our home's lot (1.27acre) and receive a solid signal. I like that it supports vlan tagging for multiple SSIDs and rarely have any issues with the unit. The styling is such that most assume it's a CO monitor or smoke detector.

I do recommend getting into the interface and disabling the LED lights as they are a bit on the bright side.
