Encantado,
By A Customer
This review is from: Encantado: Pink Dolphin of the Amazon (Hardcover)
Encantado guides readers on an amazing Amazonian journey, ostensibly to ferret out information on pink dolphins. Montgomery, however, is fishing for young conservationists! Her enthusiasm, glorious descriptions and hilarious comments disguise the fact that Encantado is not only a beautiful, information-packed picture book, it also represents a very real problem in a very real place that is vitally important to all of us.I wish I'd had this book when I was a kid!

Encantardo: The Amazing Pink River Dolphin,
By
This review is from: Encantado: Pink Dolphin of the Amazon (Hardcover)
Last year when I when I was planning to go to the Amazon, I read Journey of the Pink Dolphins: An Amazon Quest by Sy Montgomery. It was an adult documentary about the author's journey in search of the Amazonian pink river dolphin. I not only enjoyed the book, but I fell in love with this amazing creature. When I found Encantado: Pink Dolphin of the Amazon by the same author, I had a certain expectation that I would be in for a treat. I was not disappointed. Encantardo captures the essence of adventure, nature, and the illusive habits of the boto rosa, as the natives or Indios call the pink dolphin. This picture book, clearly geared to young people, is one that will enthrall adults as well. I loved the format, the photographs, and the information. I thought I knew a great deal about botos, especially after my own experiences of swimming with them in the wild, but I learned many new things from this book. The pictures are wonderful. I know from my own attempts that capturing a photo, never mind more than a glimpse, of a pink dolphin is difficult. What I particularly liked about Encantado was the author's obvious enthusiasm for her subject. What makes this book special is that she is able to translate her enthusiasm to the written work and invite the reader to become involved in caring about and safeguarding this extraordinary animal and the phenomenal rainforest that allows it to survive. I would recommend this book to families, children and adults, who love wildlife and who have a respect and love for the environment. I think that many young people would become excited to learn that pink dolphins exist, that they are very intelligent, and that they are part of an ecosystem that is unique and necessary to the rest of the world. When readers learn that the lives of these remarkable creatures are in danger, I think they will be glad to find resources in this book that help direct them toward solutions.

Encantado: A great book for kids!,
By Chicago Reader (Chicago) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Encantado: Pink Dolphin of the Amazon (Hardcover)
This is a marvelous book for your kid, your nephew or niece, your grandchild.Full of the excitement of discovery and the adventure of investigating a little-known creature in a dazzlingly diverse and mysterious rainforest world. A fun read, and packed with great facts kids will want to learn and share. More than facts, though, the book gets across the idea that the young reader CAN be an explorer, CAN be a scientist, and CAN help save the rainforest. Every kid should read this, and it would make a great addition to grade school curricula.

Pink Dolphins, Enchanting Mysteries,
By
This review is from: Encantado: Pink Dolphin of the Amazon (Hardcover)
Sy Montgomery's Journey of the Pink Dolphins: An Amazon Quest was published in 2000. Sy used her research for that book to write Encantado, a book for young readers, sort of a pink dolphins light.Much of this book is written in the second person, a device that works well in making a connection between author and her young audience. Montgomery's text is very understandable as she always keeps focused on her audience, on their interests, feelings, and curiosity. Readers will enjoy the photographs which add a layer of richness and reinforcement to the text. Any adult who has taken photographs will be impressed by the talent and vision of Dianne Taylor-Snow the photographer for this series of expeditions to the Amazon basin. I was a little disappointed that there weren't more photographs of the pink dolphins and more information about them. The reader soon learns, however, that much is not known about these elusive water mammals. There are no lulls in this book as the reader accompanies Montgomery on her search for the pink dolphin and meets many unusual and exotic plants and animals along the way. In the author's books for her young readers she never fails to stress the importance of being nature's caretakers and ends the book with suggestions on how to help and sources for further reading and research. Montgomery also points out the skills and education necessary for occupations of the professionals she meets and introduces to her readers. Pink Dolphin is up to Montgomery's usual standards and sure to please those with an interest in nature, science, animals, and exploration.

I had no idea pink dolphins existed so when I saw this book I thought it was just a children's book and was very pleased when I started reading and looking thorugh the pages. It is a perfect book to share with children, my daughter loves it. The words and photographs set forth a great message about our world around us and the environment so it is educational and fun at the same time. There is enough there to teach adults some things - as I said I had nno idea about pink dolphins and that was just one of the things the book revealed. Very enjoyable and highly recommended. |
