Buyer Beware!!!,
By
This review is from: Encantamento (Audio CD)
First off, five stars to Ms. Arnauth for what I feel certain is another amazing album. I have heard her in person, and have listened to other albums of hers, and she is AMAZING.
Sadly, EMI has chosen to implement copy protection technology on this album which prevents me from playing it in my car, or on my PC using my MusicMatch Jukebox player. This is in direct violation of the "fair use" act established by the Federal Government that protects the right of individuals to make a backup copy of their media, and it also violates common sense when it makes it impossible to play the CD on the only two players available to me. Thanks EMI - brilliant decision. At this point, I'll be purchasing no more music on the EMI label, no matter how much I admire the artist.

Memories of home,
By
This review is from: Encantamento (Audio CD)
My father is from Madeira, and as his old LPs of Amalia Rodrogues and other classic fado artists have been wearing out, I've been searching for new fado CDs to help replace his collection. He's liked some artists well enough, but when he put this album on, he called me immediately, and couldn't stop telling me how much he loved Mafalda's voice. He even asked me to find him anything else by her that I could.
To me, that's the highest recommendation.

Gloomy, intense, romantic and melancholic,
This review is from: Encantamento (Audio CD)
Although this kind of music is normally not my cup of tea, I really love this CD. Arnauth has a beautiful clear and strong voice. The songs are gloomy, intense, romantic and melancholic but also rhythmic. Above all it is all very melodious and accessible, even for non-lovers of Fado. For people who like this kind of offbeat music, I would also recommend Deb's "Souad Massi". I highly recommend this CD!

Grows on you,

She has a great voice and good songs. At first listening we found that the CD lacks real highlights, the songs seem to blend into each other, but as we listened to it several times we found that it really is a beatiful CD. It actually is a bit hypnotic; her voice is so rich and the instruments so mellow. It is more for the real fado fan, not for a beginner.

Talented Performer and Songwriter,

I eagerly awaited my CD having read other reviews. There was no disappointment - I am in awe of this lady's power of her beautiful voice and its versatility. Favourites include No Teu Poema and her duo with Monica Ferraz in O Voz da Minh'Alma. This is a very well recorded album of traditional Portuguese music with excellent accompaniments from Jose Nunes, Joao Penedo and not forgetting Luis Oliveira, the partner in the songwriting duo. For anyone interested in Fado music this album is a MUST!

I picked this up after a short listen and I'm very glad I did. I don't know much about fado, but this woman can SING! Sexy, strong, rich and passionate. Couldn't be better. I plan to buy all of her music I can get my hands on.

Out of this world,

I am truly in love with Mafalda, so my review can hardly be objective. Her voice puts her audience under her spell. I picked this cd up and took home with me. After listening to it, I decided to look her up on the internet. To my surprise she was on an European tour and the next week I saw her live. I have to say that there have been very few concerts that made such a deep impression on me, so breathtaking was her appearance. I have seen her perform afterwards when her cd Diario was released, which I also highly recommend.
Every time it astonishes me how she uses her voice to create an intimate atmosphere and captivates her audience. To me she is the best Fado singer today, althought I like to listen to Mariza or Carla Pires as well. My knowlegde of the Portuguese language is, alas, very flimsy but these ladies use a musical language that is universally understood. The only downside to this cd is the protection, because on my MP3 player or pc all the songs have wrecked beginnings.

Encantada!,
This review is from: Encantamento (Audio CD)
Mafalda Arnauth is by far the best voice of fado. Her voice is warm, inviting and rich with emotion. Ms Arnauth not only has a beautiful voice, but she is also the producer, the composer and the writer of her own music. Fado is evolving in Mafalda's hands and voice, and although she is maintaining the soul of fado, she is leaving behind the sorrow of its lyrics and in exchange she is writing lyrics full of hope. I'm completely under the spell of Encantamento and the beauty of its poems. Sophia de Mello Breyner's poem "As Fontes" is just a little example of the treasure that I was able to find on this album "I will drink the light and the dawn, I will drink the voice of that promise which sometimes flies through me, and I will fulfill my entire being."

Deeper than the sea...,
This review is from: Encantamento (Audio CD)
This woman's eyes are deeper than the sea, and so is her music. Her voice is very strong and powerful, and yet very mellow compared to many other singers of Fado - Amalia Rodrigues, Dulce Pontes, Misia... These ladies even sound belligerent... but Mafalda is extremely feminine. Her voice slides gently over the soft waves of guitars, and her sensuality wins your heart from the very first note. My favourite tracks are "Eu Venho", written by Mafalda herself (she sings: "I came from the force of tide..." - there really is something of a mermaid in her:) and "O Voz Da Minh'Alma", a duet with another absolutely amazing singer, Monica Ferraz. I love Portugal, I love Lisbon, I love the sea... and all the beauty of this lovely country is present in Mafalda's voice. A real gem.
