I'm a big fan of the "fairytales retold" genre, and after reading reviews I had high expectations of this one. The writing style reminds me of victorian erotica, which isn't necessarily a bad thing, but themewise felt like mellow erotica for the comfortably feminist gentle reader. I guess my personal kink factor is a little higher than the target audience. This is NOT the style/concept of the Anne Rice Sleeping Beauty, which is vastly higher on the sexually adventurous intensity scale. That all being said, this is a fine starter novel for a Lady's introduction to erotic reading. It has comfortably familliar fairytale themes, a self-empowerment message, nothing too shocking in language or content, and a couple of quite good scenes. I would definitely reccommend it to friends who have tried little erotica before, and might want a gentle introduction to pique thier curiosity.

Powerful!,
By Reader Woman "The Book Diva" (New York) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Enchanted: Erotic Bedtime Stories For Women (Paperback)
I absolutely adored Nancy Madore's Enchanted. When we take into consideration the fact that fairy tales have been used to tame women's sexuality and to instill negative ideals about beauty and image, Madore's reclaimation of the genre to free women's thinking about sex and sexuality is awe-inspiring. I like the way she takes some fantasies that we have been taught to think of as taboo and others that have been deemed just a little naughty and makes them come to life in a positive and powerful way. The most postive aspect of this collection, however, is the underlying messages about women's beauty images, the beauty-myth and self-esteem. The collection is a must read for every woman who wants to more fully experience her own erotic power.

Enchanting.,
This review is from: Enchanted: Erotic Bedtime Stories For Women (Paperback)
I really liked this book, mostly because it takes old fairy tales and makes them new again--and what girl doesn't love fairy tales? I thought the erotica was sensual and the writing very good. It's a must have for women, but you don't necessarily have to read it at bedtime! It's definitely romantic.

Smolderingly erotic fairy tales for adults!,
This review is from: Bedtime Stories for Women (Paperback)
I loved this collection of erotic retelling of popular fairytales. Bedtime Stories for Women reminds me of Anne Rice's Sleeping Beauty novels in that they turn a sweet fairytale into something extremely naughty and pleasurable (so to speak) to read. Nancy Madore renames the titles of some of the most memorable stories out there. The author also adds some original stories with a cartoonish setting. My favorites are "The Empress' New Clothes," "Cat and Mouse," "Goldilocks and the Three Barons," "Mirror on the Wall," "Beauty and the Beast," and "East of Sun." Not only are the stories smolderingly erotic, they also empower women to be uninhibited and independent. Some of the stories also deal with issues about one's physical appearance. "The Ugly Duckling" delves into the aforementioned issue in a profound, thought-provoking way. Bedtime Stories for Women is one of the best erotic short-story collections I have read in a long time. Ms. Madore is an excellent writer and I look forward to reading more of her stuff.

DISAGREE With "I Can't Believe This",
This review is from: Bedtime Stories for Women (Paperback)
Reading "I Can't Believe This"'s review I have to wonder why she bought the book. This is a book about sex and sexual fantasies that's why its called "bedtime" stories. There is lots of sex in the book, but I didn't see any rape or anything else to put women down. I read erotica and romance novels all the time and I can tell you that this book is really tame compared to most (I take it you never read anything by Ann Rice?). "I can't believe this" makes the book sound like vulgar porn, but actually, one of the things that impressed me about it was that it was very sexy without all the tacky inuendos and obsenities you usually find in erotica ("I can't believe this"'s "creamy thigh fantasies" did offend me). I thought Madore presented the fantasies in a very classy way. I would recommend this book to readers who enjoy erotica.

Literary Erotica,

This review is from: Enchanted: Erotic Bedtime Stories For Women (Paperback)
I was enchanted with this bunch of fairy tales. The stories were re-told brilliantly. I could not put it down. Nancy Madore incorporates an erotic fantasy into each fairy tale and you would never think for a minute the stories were not intended to be told this way. For example, in her "Beauty and the Beast" which was my favorite, Beauty falls in love with a half man, half beast and the story really heats up without a single dirty word. Madore also takes every opportunity to show compassion for her characters while never missing a chance to score a point for women. An example of this is "Mirror on the Wall" where she re-writes the story of Snow White's evil step mother with enormous empathy for what a woman goes through during the aging process. This book made me feel good in more ways than one. I immediately put in my order for her new book, "The Twelve Dancing Princesses" and I can't wait to see what she does with that story, which is one of my favorite fairy tales of all times.

What a FANTASTIC Book!,
By Gina (Chatsworth, CA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Bedtime Stories for Women (Paperback)
Sexual fairy tales for women! I loved the idea and could not wait to get the book. And the stories exceeded my expectations. Nancy Madore picked all the best fairy tales (there was one I had never heard of before: East of the Sun and West of the Moon. I don't remember hearing that one when I was child but it sure was a good one in this version). But all the ones I remember are here: Goldilocks, Bluebeard, Beauty and the Beast, The Ugly Duckling and more. The stories were so much fun to read, and wow, when they got to the juicy parts! But the best part was that the stories were not tacky or obscene. They were more like sexual art. I can't imagine any woman not enjoying this book.

Fairytales with a twist,
By The RAWSISTAZ Reviewers (RAWSISTAZ.com and BlackBookReviews.net) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Bedtime Stories for Women (Hardcover)
BEDTIME STORIES FOR WOMEN are guaranteed to give rise to your senses...and your libido. You will never read fairytales the same way after reading one of these stories. My personal favorites were "Beauty and the Beast," "Cat and Mouse," "Goldilocks and the Three Barons," "East of the Sun and West of the Moon," and "Snow White in the Woods." Each had me fantasizing, wanting more and still leaving much to the imagination.Ms. Madore expresses sensuality/sexuality without using the vulgarity or crass words that have began to plague modern day erotica. BEDTIME STORIES FOR WOMEN are told in an eloquent manner that is insatiable; they may even tempt you to want to create your own ending. Curl up with your significant other and prepare to read him a bedtime story. I must warn you that these stories are not meant to put him to sleep, but to wake him instead. I look forward to reading other erotica stories written by Ms. Madore; I'm sure I won't be disappointed by her fairytales with a twist. Reviewed by Ess Mays

Thank God I didnt take "I can't believe this"'s advice.,
This review is from: Bedtime Stories for Women (Paperback)
I feel sorry for that woman for thinking that sexuality is something to be ashamed of.
I almost didnt purchase this wonderful book of erotic short stories because I thought the person who wrote that knew what they were talking about , and purchased this solely because I wanted to see what she was so pissed about , and everyone else seemed to enjoy so much. Not only is it tastefully written, it touches upon fantasies and things that alot of women seem to be ashamed of because of society. (which Ms. Madore also lightly touches upon) I thought this was an excellent read and recommend it to everyone, if not for this review, then maybe some of the others. (who actualy grasps the brilliance of this author)

Wonderful twist on children's fairy tales,

This review is from: Bedtime Stories for Women (Paperback)
Looking around this site I stubbled upon this book and being a lover of fairy tales I thought it couldn't hurt to check this one out..and I'm glad I did it was well worth the money. The fairy tales in this book are some of my most favorites and the twists that the author put on them were wonderful. I was very surprised and couldn't put the book down.
The way the author describes everything in the stories is excellent not crude or nasty, but in a way that makes your blush a bit as well as get your imagination going. I had no trouble putting myself in different parts of the stories. I do hope that the author writes more and does as well as she did on this one. |
