Book Description

Harlequin Historical April 1, 1997

Dangerous Magic Tainted the Air

Cursed to spend his days as a wolf, at night Rolfe de Viandin was under a different enchantment. One woven by the beauteous Annelise de Sayerne—the woman fated to be his doom…and his salvation!

Vowing to marry solely for love seemed to Annelise the only way to escape her family's legacy of violence. Yet now she was oathbound to the mysterious Rolfe de Viandin, a man who denied her his trust…though he'd managed to capture her heart!

Review

Rolfe de Viandin is on his way home to Chateau Viandin after six years in the Holy Land. As the second son, Rolfe has no claim to any of his family's holdings, but surely he deserves a little land of his own. And to persuade his older brother further, Rolfe intends to bring him a gift-- an exotic bottle whose contents are unknown. Letting his curiosity get the better of him, Rolfe removes the stopper from the bottle and unleashes... a jihn! The jihn is forced to reward Rolfe for her freedom and in the middle of a winter forest a magical palace appears. But the jihn has a nasty temper and curses Rolfe to live as a wolf! But then a second jihn appears from the bottle and lessens Rolfe's curse. He is cursed to remain a wolf by day and the curse can be lifted by love. Unfortunately, Rolfe is convinced that the jihns and the palace are the result of some bad cheese he ate. Little does he know... When forced to choose between two suitors-- one whom she has never met-- Annelise de Sayerne chooses the convent. Of course, she never expected her half-brother Yves to take her seriously. But Yves intends to see that she is safely taken care of before he goes off to seek his fortune. So, they set off for the convent only to become hopelessly lost in the forest. When wolves attack them, Yves sends Annelise off on her own-- but the wolves give chase and she is driven to the gate of a palace. It hardly seems possible, but she is refused entry unless she agrees to marry the master of the palace. Fearing for her life, Annelise readily agrees. Rolfe had forgotten that part of his curse included having to marry the first woman who walked through the gate. The other part of his curse is that if he ever trusts anyone, that person will bring a murderer to his side. Convinced Annelise can't be trusted, Rolfe manages to exchange vows with her without ever telling her his name or showing his face. Then he remembers that his curse can be lifted by love. If that is true, all he has to do is to love Annelise. Trapped in the palace, Annelise learns to love the stranger who is her husband-- but she will not be happy until she knows his secrets. Rolfe must learn the true meaning of love before he can be free from his curse, but what price will he pay?Magical! Claire Delacroix creates the most entertaining stories! 4.0 out of 5 stars Wonderful! Totally absorbing!, July 29, 1999
This review is from: Enchanted (Harlequin Historical) (Paperback)
The story is a combination of Aladdin, Beauty and the Beast and The Polar Bear King but with a very interesting twist! Annelise de Sayerne and Rolfe de Viandin are both such a strong-willed and strong principled characters.

4.0 out of 5 stars A Twist of Fate, September 12, 2010
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Enchanted (Paperback)
Having read many books by this author, I was impressed how different the style of this book was when compared to her other novels. Including the other two that complete this triology. Genies, spells, enchanted palaces...quite a different venue than I am used to reading but very enjoyable. The story is complete, no loose ends left at the end and it truly brings a conclusion to the other books in the triology, yet you do not have to read them to get the gist of the story. Claire Delacroix will always be one of my favorite romance authors!!
