Book Description

July 1, 1997
Authentic ancient motifs - from natural animals to mythological and imperial figures - are the basis for the charted designs in Enchanted Knitting. Here you'll find patterns based on the ancient Romanian beast-man Silvanus, figures in the Paleolithic caves of Europe, and tattoos from the famous Pazyryk women of central Asia. Chinese, Mexican, Nigerian, and Native American cultures are among the many other sources for these diverse motifs.

Editorial Reviews

From Library Journal

Like the authors' previous volumes (The Prolific Knitting Machine, Interweave, 1990, and The Tap-Dancing Lizard, Interweave, 1992), this is an excellent source for graphed design motifs adapted from many cultures worldwide. This volume includes more than 200 charts and a gallery of sample garments demonstrating how motifs can be combined effectively. The "project" section of the book includes detailed instructions for knitting unique and colorful African-style caps, knee socks, drawstring bags, and cloaks. If your library collects in the area of machine knitting and you don't already own the authors' earlier works, pick those titles up, along with this one, while they are still in print.

4.0 out of 5 stars Excellent resource, January 9, 2000

This review is from: Enchanted Knitting: Charted Motifs for Hand and Machine Knitting (Paperback)
All of the Cartwright-Jones knitting books are wonderful, and this one adds to the collection with amazing designs and motifs from all over the world, plus detailed directions for a pillbox-type hat, lavishly patterned kneesocks, a drawstring bag, and a hooded cloak/coat. These are a far cry from most knitting patterns available--they are ethnically or historically inspired and they allow the knitter to fit and style according to her needs and taste. The only reason I don't give five stars is that the charts are hard to read and for some reason don't give the stitch x row counts the way the Tap Dancing Lizard book did. A word of warning: these patterns are geared heavily toward machine knitters. Hand knitters will not be as happy.

5.0 out of 5 stars I like this book! :), October 16, 2001

This ia a faboo book, but not for someone who wants to learn to knit. It is as the tiltle says, charted desgins. That's it. Oh it has pretty pictues and ideas for projects, but there's no how-to instructions.

The patterns are wonderful! I love the celtic ones, and the little dancing skeletons. And the cover design which is a tattoo from a ice age mummy! (how cool is that??) The patterns are in black to white greyscales. They a rather easy to follow.

Highly recommended if you want patterns that are not the usual!

2.0 out of 5 stars Hard to read the charts, May 27, 1999

What were they thinking when they made the contrast so hard to read? What's wrong with black and white? The designs are attractive, but you'll go blind trying to reproduce them. Did I mention that the charts are hard to read?
