After losing his parents in a tragic accident, ten-year-old Max is forced to adjust to the itinerant life that comes with living in foster care. Further adding to his frustration is the difficult time that he has making new friends and succeeding academically from having to change schools so frequently. For such a loving, tender-hearted young man, the hopes of a better life keep growing dimmer by the day...
Out of the blue, though, Max gets a call from his grandfather, who has decided to take the youngster in. Things begin to look even more upbeat when Max discovers a mystical library in his grandfather's home filled with magical books containing characters that literally come to life. Having finally found the peaceful bliss he's sought for so long, Max has no idea that his actions have actually re-awakened a sinister force that, unbeknownst to him, has wreaked havoc in his family's past... When the shadowy menace re-emerges on the scene and resumes its destructive ways, Max joins forces with his new mystical friends to figure out a way to stop the evil in its tracks - and save his and his grandfather's life at the same time... Illustrious, imaginative, and creatively crafted, The Enchanted Library is a highly entertaining read. An enjoyable treat for readers of all ages, author Karen Andrea's tale is filled with equal parts humor and adventure, making for a delightful overall reading experience. Furthermore, Andrea displays considerable wit in the playful pokes that she takes at some of the most popular literary figures in the current mainstream, while simultaneously lending a quite unique, authentic appeal to her own. Such a clever feat is certainly not an easy task to pull off, but Andrea does so with commendable grace and moxie. For its originality and creative, unique energy, The Enchanted Library belongs on the bookshelves of readers young and old worldwide. Highly recommended. Rhonda Carver Apex Reviews

After spending years in children's homes since his parents' death, Max has a hard time adjusting to his new life with his grandfather. He can't help but wonder what secret his grandfather is hiding behind a mysterious door down a dark, winding corridor that he was told to stay away from.
When Max manages to get the door open and discovers an enchanted library, he is entranced. The library is filled with magic, talking books. The books, however, are threatened with the possibility of ceasing to exist. Following a few basic rules, Max begins to read no more than three lines out of each book. When he breaks that most basic rule, though, and unleashes a great evil, Max finds his grandfather and his new life on the brink of being destroyed. Can Max save his grandfather and keep his new home? Will he be able to find a way to save the magic books while still getting rid of the evil? THE ENCHANTED LIBRARY is a quick, exciting read filled with adventure, mystery, and magic. The characters are delightful; the plot is intense and well-written. Those who like fantasy, adventure, magic, and libraries will enjoy reading this book. Reviewed by: Kira M

Max is feeling very alone, he has bounced from one foster home to another. He always ends up back at the Crosby House Children's Home. He finally gets placed with his grandpa, but he still feels a bit alone.
One day he gets made at Velma, his grandpa's housekeeper and takes of down one of the halls in the big old house and gets lost. He starts hearing voices coming from a room that he remembers his grandpa telling him was off limits. He can't help himself and opens it up to find a library, but its not just your ordinary library. No, these library is unique because the books can talk and fly around the room. He learns that these library books are rejects and he feels a bit of a connection because he feels like a reject himself. But you have to follow the house rules that Momma, one of the old books, tells him about. When his curiosity gets the best of him, bad things happen. My thoughts: This is the first children's book I have ever reviewed. I think The Enchanted library was interesting. The reject library made me laugh when it came to some of the names. Malice in Wonderland, this poor book was full of misprints. This book, and more was why they were stuffed in a room where nobody came to read them. Like Max I wanted to know more about the little library and that is what makes you keep reading. It's only 169 pages so it was a real quick read and if you have a good reader in your house I am sure they will finish it fast wanting to know what was going to happen to Max and his grandpa. I am going to have my niece read this book so later on I will have a different opinion of the book on my blog. :) Oh yeah, one other thing. This is a British book so I had fun sometimes trying to figure out what some words meant, like bunking off (playing hooky), so if you kid wonders what something might be that is the reason. It just made it sort of fun for me. :)

Young Max Milford has been in and out of several foster homes since his parents' accident. There have been lots of disappointments, but he has now come to live with his grandfather. Max can't believe this will last long either, although everything changes for him when he finds an old deserted library of misfit books--misfits just like himself.
I enjoyed this unique children's adventure story by author, Karen Andrea |
