"Marvelous...impossible to put down."—RT Book Reviews Tops Pick, 4 ½ stars

Dark Things Lurk in Grimspell Castle

Sir Nicodemus Wulfson is haunted by memories of murder—and ghosts. He brings in a ghost-hunter in the form of celebrated spiritualist Lady Philomena Radcliff, and promptly, all hell breaks loose. Is Philomena a threat to his already suffering family? Or can Nico trust his burgeoning attraction to her?

Is it Him She Should Fear?

Lady Philomena has resigned herself to a life of spinsterhood performing séances for the aristocracy—until she meets sexy young werewolf Sir Nico. She agrees to try ridding his castle of its increasingly restless spirits. But there are more mysteries within Grimspell Castle than even Nico is aware of, and when a local girl turns up dead, Phil wonders if she's risking her life as well as her heart.

"Kennedy brilliantly and seamlessly lures readers into a realm where magic exists."—RT Book Reviews Top Pick, 4 ½ stars, RT Reviewers' Choice Nominee for Best Historical Paranormal

Editorial Reviews

"Well done, Ms. Kennedy!" - From the First Page to the Lastr

"Take a bit of Mary Poppins + Harry Potter + Beauty and the Beast and you have this story. Magical creatures and ghost and witches and shape-shifters... delightful!" - Books-n-Kisses

"It grabbed my interest almost immediately and kept it until the last page. The characters are fantastic and extremely unique. The world that was built is full of magic, chaos and intrigue." - Night Owl Reviews

I highly recommend this series. It gets better and better with each tale. There is a part of me that says Ms. Kennedy cannot possibly top how wonderful Enchanting The Beast is yet I cannot wait for the next book to see what new enchantment she has planned for her readers.

5.0 out of 5 stars Magical storytelling! April 19, 2009
Format:Mass Market Paperback
Ghost hunter Lady Philomena Radcliff relieves suffering. When Sir Nicodemus Wulfson approaches her to come to Grimspell Castle to hunt down the angry ghosts that torment his brother Royden, she can hardly refuse, even though her spiritual sensitivity warns her that Nico is no ordinary man. His god-like body takes her breath away but underneath she catches a glimpse of the darkness in his soul. Man and wolf, this were-creature has brooding secrets. As the two of them are drawn together, external forces pull them apart. Royden's ghosts step up the ante, forcing Lady Philomena to descend into the darkest places of the once medieval castle. Can she uncover the powerful force that lurks in the shadows? Outside of the castle, a murdering wolf is on the prowl. Has the wolf within Nico lost control? Is he responsible for the destruction and murder that follows in his wake? Can Nico prove his innocence and protect those around him or will his past endanger all those he loves, including Philomena?

In ENCHANTING THE BEAST, the third book of The Relics of Merlin series, Kathryne Kennedy takes readers into a darker corner of magical Victorian England for a light yet moving fairy tale guaranteed to bring lots of smiles at the sheer beauty of the author's magical imagination. London society is governed by an aristocracy based on magical ability, a society that frowns upon the lowly shape-shifters. Grimspell Castle with its rumors of murder and were-creature inhabitants is not the kind of place for a society lady. Lady Philomena herself never really fit into society. Older and unmarried, Lady Philomena seems destined for spinsterhood, especially when none of the men in her past understood her ability to talk to ghosts. Sir Nico is not like any man she has ever met before.

3.0 out of 5 stars story like a fairy tale May 17, 2009
A Kid's Review
Format:Mass Market Paperback
I read many fantasy/futuristic type stories and have enjoyed the best of them just as much as any historic/victorian story - but this one, no matter how she wrote it, did not work for me. First, I did not like that she was 13 years old than him, please!!! I guess I like old fashioned stories/romance. And the constant quick changing from man to animal bothered me - what happened to the clothing they wore? Just disappeared and reappeared everytime they become a "human" again? It was like too difficult to explain, so it was easier just to let it 'come and go'. And his not believing she sees ghosts - If the main character was a werewolf and everyone he knows is some sort of 'were' (human who can become an animal or snakes, or anything!) - how could he not believe in ghosts! Come on!!! That is so absurd! This read more like a child's version of a fairytale - and this "stickman" - a stick that is like a person that sticks on to you. I'm sorry - this was too childish for me.

4.0 out of 5 stars Enchanting the reader. July 17, 2009
Format:Mass Market Paperback
A ghost hunter is an odd vocational choice for a Lady, but Philomena "Phil," has magical abilitites that allow her to see and talk with ghosts.
Her work is her life, and she long ago let dreams of romance fade away. She now conducts seances for a price and helps resolve issues between the living and the newly dead.
Of course, there are always sceptics...and Sir Nicodemus is one of them. He travels to see Phil on behalf of his brother, Roy, who is being haunted by a mean pack of ghosts and his famously haunted castle,
Even though he doesn't believe in her power, Nicodemus hires her anyway and sparks begin to fly...
Well written and a great addition to the "Enchanting" series, where ancient magical relics need to be collected to prevent the havoc they cause.
I really like this series. Kennedy has a way of writing that is never boring, and when I start one of her books, I usually finish it within a matter of hours, because I can't put it down. My only quibble is that there are so many shape shifting characters, it makes the story a little overly complicated, trying to keep up with who is in what form, at any given time.
Still, a fun, well written read.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great paranormal - shape shifting book June 14, 2009
Format:Mass Market Paperback
I really enjoyed this book. I bought it for the cover. It interested me so much, that I wanted to find out all about the characters inside.
This book is about Philomena and Nico, who are are on a hunt to help his brother who is having nightmares about seeing ghosts in the castle.
Philomena is a ghost finding woman. Nico is a shape shifter. Of course, there is love at first sight. Problem is Philomena is 40 and Nico is 27 years old. The whole village is made up of shape shifters of all kinds.
stick men, faeries, were wolves, rabbits etc. What an interesting concept.
I read the book in one night. I am going to have to read it again to catch all the different types of shape shifters I missed the first go around. Magical books are a fun read for me. I loved the characters and the world they live in.
Pick up a cold glass of tea, or a glass of wine and enjoy this fun book.

5.0 out of 5 stars Love this entry in the Relics of Merlin series April 15, 2014
Format:Kindle Edition
I've been sort of waffly on the Merlin series. I really liked the concept, but didn't necessarily connect with the books. Until now. This book I absolutely LOVED! Magic, historical, and ghosts. What's not to love?

Philomena - a titled character thanks to her gift for contacting the dead, she's older (40ish I believe), who's pretty much written off ever having a love of her own. She's not innocent though, thanks to living in a house which used to be a brothel and the ghosts thoroughly enjoy showing her some of their former acts. I found it amusing when she used some of that knowledge once she and Nicodemus got intimate.

Nico - I really really REALLY liked Nico. Being a shifter, he's not affected by magic but that doesn't mean he's blind to Philo's gift. He's initially skeptical, but contacts her to hopefully help his brother out - he expects it simply to be a psychological fix and it turns out he comes to believe in Phil's gifts because he sees physical evidence that the ghosts really are there (one of the ghosts kisses her and he sees the indentation on her cheek at the kiss, among other things).

The best part of this book for me was the bigger mystery as they tracked down the relic of Merlin that was involved. The ghosts we meet because of the relic were appropriately spooky, and in places scary. I didn't see coming who the villain really was and I always appreciate that. Although, maybe I'm just slipping because I keep getting surprised, and I used to think I was good at figuring these things out.

The final climactic battle scene was fantastic and eerie and just...awesome.

Add in the romance, an older woman/younger man dynamic which isn't done that much, and it was pretty close to a perfect read for me.
