Book Description

August 1997
Emmaline Hatter was a beautiful, brilliant, and rich Wall Street financier in the nineteenth century until the crash of 1893 wiped her out completely. Desperate to recoup her losses, she joins Dr. Larence Digby in his search for the legendary lost city of Cibola, rumored to be rich in gold. Emmaline was used to getting her own way, but Larence was not about to give up control of his expedition to a woman. Somehow, in a world of enchantment, each would have to learn to believe -- to trust the other with their lives, their secrets, and their hearts . . .

Editorial Reviews

From Publishers Weekly

Emmaline Amanda Hatter (the "Mad Hatter of Wall Street") and Dr. sp ok/pk Larence Digby are damaged goods. Both were orphaned young; the former was thrown on her own devices, which she parlayed into a vast fortune on Wall Street, while the latter, tormented by a crippled ankle and memories of an unsympathetic grandmother, became a fanciful professor at Columbia University. In 1893, the two meet in New York City when Emmaline funds Larence's pk expedition to the lost Aztec city of Cibola. They eventually become intimate when Emmaline is wiped out by the Wall Street crash and follows Larence to New Mexico in an attempt to get her money back or at the very least to insure her percentage of the expedition's spoils. Hannah ( A Handful of Heaven ) offers witty banter in the first half of the book; later, however, she resorts to broadcasting revelations that would be better left implied. As they draw closer to the magical Cibola, with its equally magical tubers and guardians, Larence and Emmaline learn that it's " okay to be afraid ,"stet itals to " laugh ," to be " together ," to trust, love, etc. If you wanted to know what would happen if Carlos Castaneda and Melody Beattie collaborated on a romance, here's your chance.

From the Publisher

It's always a pleasure to introduce a new writer to the consumer, especially when it is a well-written romance. This second novel from Kristin Hannah proved to us she was definitely someone to watch, so we grabbed the opportunity to really promot and build her. I particularly liked this book because of its unusual hero. Lisa Congelosi, Sales Rep --This text refers to an out of print or unavailable edition of this title.

More About the Author

Kristin Hannah was born in September 1960 in Southern California and grew up at the beach, making sand castles and playing in the surf. When she was eight years old, her father drove the family to Western Washington which they called home.

After working in a trendy advertising agency, Kristin decided to go to law school. "But you're going to be a writer" are the prophetic words she would never forget from her mother. Kristin was in her third-and final-year of law school and her mom was in the hospital, facing the end of her long battle with cancer. Kristin was shocked to discover that her mother believed she would become a writer. For the next few months, they collaborated on the worst, most clichéd historical romance ever written.

After her mom's death, she packed up all those bits and pieces of paper they'd collected and put them in a box in the back of her closet. Kristin got married and continued practicing law.

Then Kristin found out she was pregnant and was on bed rest for five months. By the time she'd read every book in the house and started asking her husband for cereal boxes to read, she knew she was a goner. That's when her husband reminded her of the book she'd started with her mom. Kristin pulled out the boxes of research material, dusted them off and began writing. By the time their son was born, she'd finished a first draft and found an obsession.

The rejections came, of course, and they stung for a while, but each one really just spurred her to try harder, work more. In 1990, Kristin got "the call," and in that moment, she went from a young mother with a cooler-than-average hobby to a professional writer, and has never looked back. In all the years between then and now, she have never lost her love of, or her enthusiasm for, telling stories. Kristin feels truly blessed to be a wife, a mother, and a writer.

5.0 out of 5 stars Unique Plot! Interesting Characters!, December 16, 2002

Emaline "The mad hatter" Hatter is ruthless, cold, experienced investment banker... And... Entirely female!

When Emaline decides to help out an old family friend, by hosting a dinner party for HIS friend, a struggling professor.... Little does she realize that she will be suckered into investing in him, entirely out of sympathy!

Professor Larence Digby has a dream. Finding the LOST city of Cibola. Unfortunately, that means finding rich investors who will finance him, because he is dead broke! When he meets Emaline Hatter he knows that he would like more from her than money- Can Larence convince Emaline to give love a chance?

I /really/ cannot say enough positive things about this book! Emaline Hatter is a really great romance heroine. No 'twittering' virgin, Emaline loves one thing... MONEY! And she intends to have a lot of it! Larence is a naive 'absent minded professor type' who enjoys all the details that life provides. These two make a great pair!

I recommend this novel for people looking for something different in romance!

4.0 out of 5 stars great story, January 27, 2005

Others have done a good job summarizing the plot, so let me just say this. I like romance novels, but i don't like pointlessly sentimental tripe. This book tugged my heart strings and made me smile without making me gag. Emmaline's anguish over the specter of poverty, Larence's self righteousness and vulnerability...I recommend it to anyone who still wants to believe in magic.

Wow for being a historical novel, this book defintly had a modern flair. I found it refreshing to have a heroine who wasnt A a virgin in her late twenties and B a heroine who didnt have an awful experience with sex.

The chemistry was great and the love scenes were steamy.

I recomend this book highly especially if you like take charge heroines!
