So beautiful that it's shocking. The side that cannot be viewed in the above pics shows Thumbelina sorta waving to her bird high above- it's from her vantage point...the back of the box has Thumbelina running joyfully to her bird. All the pics capture the emotion of her story well (I will totally admit here that I do not remember many details of the story- my memories of it are filled more with illustrations from my mom's book of fairy tales). There is also a drawer in the back, and a drawer on the unseen side as well, making a total of four small drawers in this box. Drawers and top open smoothly, and the box itself is well made. We actually found this Thumbelina box in a huge bin at a Goodwill filled with total junk- we were lucky that we found the one missing drawer nearby. The inside of ours is slightly damaged...in order to hear the song, you have to wind the duct taped bird manually, as the metal winding key at the back of our box is missing. (Please note here: our bird was duct taped due to it being previously loved- if you decide to purchase this box new, the bird will not be duct taped!) I am mentioning these last few facts because if this box was able to handle a previous owner, the handling/receiving department at Goodwill, then God knows how many mitts in the Goodwill bin, then you know this sucker has to be tough. A sweet departure from the ubiquitous, prissy ballerina jewelry box...lights up a gal's room with it's uniqueness.
