Great music, but...,

...disgraceful remastering on some selections. A quick comparison with the recent two-volume "dois momentos" two-fers of Tom Ze's 70's albums puts this overview to shame in terms of the audio (although it should be noted that Tom Ze supervised the remixing and remastering of those volumes and apparently had nothing to do with this best-of.) For a single-volume compilation, stick with the 1990 release on Luaka Bop.

You never heard anything like this before...,

Viva Tom Zé! For those who never heard a single song of this marvelous genious of Brazilian music, this is the one you must have: an excellent compilation of songs that you won't find anywhere else, even because the originals albuns are NOT avaiable on CD, not even in Brazil. For this same reason, this is one must-have record for those who know Tom Zé's work as well.Creative lyrics and original instrumental arrangements make this record playing again and again... The songs are compiled from Tom Zé's works at the end of the 60's and through the 70's. Later then, he was discovered by David Byrne (former Talking Heads leader) and begin an sucessfull career as one of the great names of world music. Special attention for "São São Paulo" and for the hilarious "Namoro de Portão". |
