Book Description

0521626552 978-0521626552 September 28, 1998
The Encomium Emmae Reginae is, as its title suggests, a political tract in praise of Queen Emma, daughter of Duke Richard I of Normandy, wife of King Ethelred the Unready from 1002 to 1016, and wife of the Danish conqueror King Cnut from 1017 to 1035. It is an important primary source that transports us into the heart of eleventh-century politics. This edition contains a new introduction that places the Encomium in the historical context in which it was written, and traces the career of Emma, a woman who was twice queen and who sought to preserve her position of power as queen-mother.

Editorial Reviews

Review

"This reprint of the Encomium Emmae Reginae is most welcome. not only does it make an important eleventh-century source of English and women's history more readily available, but Simon Keynes' supplementary introduction provides a helpful and thorough discussion of the historical issues raised in this work." The Medieval Review

5.0 out of 5 stars Terrific book!, October 23, 2002
By A Customer
This review is from: Encomium Emmae Reginae (Camden Classic Reprints) (Paperback)
This is a detailed, fact-filled book on Queen Emma of the 11th century. It is a fascinating portrait of a queen who lived through a lot of tragedies. Not for the light reader, though.

This review is from: Encomium Emmae Reginae (Camden Classic Reprints) (Paperback)
The "Encomium Emmae Reginae" is a political tract in praise of Queen Emma, wife of King Ethelred the Unready and later the wife of Viking conqueror King Cnut. It is a contemporary source that gives an unparalleled account of pre-Conquest England.

Sveinn, king of the Danes, was, I declare, as I have ascertained from truthful report, practically the most fortunate of all the kings of his time, so that, as seldom occurs, his happy beginning was followed by an end much happier from both the spiritual and the worldly point of view. Read the first page
