This is a detailed, fact-filled book on Queen Emma of the 11th century. It is a fascinating portrait of a queen who lived through a lot of tragedies. Not for the light reader, though.

The "Encomium Emmae Reginae" is a political tract in praise of Queen Emma, wife of King Ethelred the Unready and later the wife of Viking conqueror King Cnut. It is a contemporary source that gives an unparalleled account of pre-Conquest England.
