5.0 out of 5 stars Early - Very Early - Joyce, June 16, 2009
This review is from: Encontro Marcado (Audio CD)
Joyce is easily one of my all-time favorite musicians, which is why I seldom review her work. Through the years, her sound has changed and matured just as she has. But I will review some of her albums because it's such a treat that some of her works, albeit you have to stay on top of the activity, have been re-issued! From her album with Nelson Angelo to her recording in France, it's really a good thing for us fans! Many thanks to the labels and Far Out Records are in order.

To keep this short and sweet, this is Joyce's second album, not including her works even earlier with various groups. Because of this, you can tell that she was still working on her sound and approach. A part of this is evident when you look at how she took some q's from Os Mutantes. But the music here is tremendous and really on-par with the time-frame from which it comes; instrument and sound wise. The song starts out with the energetic "Adam, Adam," and then the very sweet, smooth and thought provoking "Encontro Marcado" shows that Joyce would never be just a 'popular' singer, rather, she would alway sing and write songs from the heart. "Bom Dia" is extremely light and airy, I love the introduction and another foreshadow of her work and how nature is always a big part of Joyce's music.

I really enjoyed this album. It really fits perfectly with some of her works through the 70's and shows her evolution as an artist. One thing that some Joyce fans from the 80's to now will notice is that this album along with maybe her first didn't feature what I'd call the 'Joyce sound' - that is, her very unique style of guitar play (Banana, Feminina, Aldeia De Ogum, Meio a Meio, Nacional Kid, Carnavalzinho, etc.). But it makes me appreciate it that much more and to hear where she started and recognize it on some of her songs through-out the 70's into the 80's and 90's is a gift. This is a sensational piece - a must have for any Joyce fan or collector. However I'd recommend some of her "Essential" albums that have been out courtesy of Retratos and Mr. Bongo to fans that may not have heard too much of Joyce's material.

Unfortunately, this one was discontinued again, so it really is a collectors piece that might be tricky to track down. That, or expect to see a large import price tag on it.
