4.0 out of 5 stars Hours of fun traveling the world and looking for treasure items
While I'd like to say we've had the program a year now, in truth, I bought it a year ago as a Christmas present for my wife, tucked it away in my dresser, and then forgot it. Oops! It was meant to be a stocking stuffer. Fast forward to this fall, and I "found" it again. Just in time for my wife's birthday! What luck! The game loaded fairly easily from CD. We have a...

2.0 out of 5 stars Like to spell words? This is the game for you., November 15, 2008

Yes, it's a Scrabble game, the main point of which is to spell words to win.

I think, however, if you are looking for a game that is a good "strategy" game, or is exciting, or gives you "rewards", you will be sorely disappointed.

I have completed several levels of the game. The object of the game is to travel from the beginning destination point to the end destination point without getting stuck within 80 days. Each "city" is a board, laid out with "roadblocks", in varying degrees of difficulty. There are sections of each board where you have to plan your words carefully, so that you don't get stuck with no where to go.

Each board contains treasure chests holding bonus points, golden letter tiles and trinkets. I have yet to see any benefit of collecting these treasures. I, in fact, have read all the rules on the game, and have done Internet searches to find a reason I should collect the treasures. I have not found one, so I have stopped bothering.

Unlike other spelling games I have played, this one has not given me a ranking or a grade, nor has it listed my best word or my longest word.

***EDIT to add - I don't know if it's my specific copy or if it is a game-wide problem, but my disc has several errors. I have reached the end of the game, and now, I cannot play the levels I have "unlocked" because the game cannot "find" me. During the course of the game, I frequently began at a stopping point to continue, only to find the board had been completely cleared as if I had never played it.***

I recommend purchasing this game USED - don't pay full price.

1.0 out of 5 stars Where in the World is Scrabble San Diego?, May 3, 2008

This review is from: Scrabble Journey [Old Version] (CD-ROM)
I'm disappointed in this game. It doesn't have a computer player that you play against so you just kind of play against yourself. You just keep putting words together to take you from one end of the board (your origin city) to the other end of the board (your destination city). I would much rather have the computer or another player create words every other turn than just keep building on my own words.
I was too bored to ever go beyond level two so maybe it somehow gets more exciting as you advance.
I'd much rather play real Scrabble than the Scrabble version of Where in the world is Carmen San Diego.
I do think elementary school kids might like this to help with their spelling though.
Would someone please recommend a good Scrabble game for PC? Thanks!

1.0 out of 5 stars Scrap this Scrabble game, April 30, 2009

This was a huge disappointment. The board is unlike a regular Scrabble board. There are areas that contain lakes, etc, which do not have word squares. In other words, it's like a map, not a Scrabble board. As you progress, the game play area squares become very limited. To increase the irritation, the tiles which you are dealt are often a nightmare to put in play on a limited board. If you want a relaxing game, this is not a good choice. This was a costly game which used the Scrabble name to grab your money.

1.0 out of 5 stars Don't buy this game!, September 24, 2010

I would definitely NOT recommend this game. The graphics were irritating,(a bird that flies into your view breaking concentration -again and again and again...), the hints were worthless (usually a red arrow suggesting a place, but often this led into the water, a building, or a place you couldn't put a word!! You have no one to play against, so if you don't have the letters you need or a place to put them...well, I still don't know what to do about that because there's no way out! Do yourself a favor - especially if you really like regular Scrabble - and skip this!

We have a few years old eMachines PC running Windows XP with Service Pack 3. No issues at all with that O.S. and this version game.

Traditional scrabble players may not like the layout, which has "boards" of various shapes surrounded by screen effects representing the locality you are in. Sheep grazing in England, sand in the deserts, water around coastal areas, etc. You get the idea. So, when you start the game (in England), you're teed up with a board representing that area. I've found that the game pretty much plays left to right. It takes a moment or two to find the "center" star to start the game, but it's not in the center. Always to the left side. There are obstacles you have to work around on each of the boards. You are presented with 7 tiles, but you have the option to exchange up to 8 times on any one locale. There's also a scoring timer. The game starts each locale at 2x, meaning whatever score you would earn, you get 2x. The faster you play, the more you can earn, up to 5x. The slower you play, you get down to 1x. There are red "exits" you have to build across / down / up / over to get to. Plus the special squares you can land on. These offer extra points, hidden letters, or hidden treasures.

As you start playing the game, you will find that there are branches available when you complete a locale, so it's quite possible to finish the game but to not have played every locale. Then you have to go back and pursue the alternate locales; that's the only way to acquire all the hidden letters and treasures. When you do complete the journey, you can go back and play any locale at any time (this assumes, of course, you've conquered every locale).

Both my wife and I enjoy the game quite a lot. I find myself going back and trying to better my score on individual sites. As to any software issues, not many. If your computer has multiple users set up, there isn't a "master file" keeping score. So, if I log in and play in my normal log in area, the game saves my results. When I return, if I then open the game while logged into the PC as someone else, the game assumes I've never played before. A minor issue. At first I thought it had erased my score. Since this game does override the normal "Windows" environment (it goes full screen and basically takes over the system for a while), toggling between Windows and the game is a little slow. Hey, if you want to play the game, don't plan to multi-task; relax and enjoy life!

I bought this game at a big box warehouse, but it's been a lot of fun and we've been playing it for months. The scrabble dictionary seems quite complete -- words like "QI" are recognized, just like the latest scrabble dictionaries show.

Folks who would like this game: People who enjoy non-traditional board layouts (think of Settlers of Catan variants for scrabble), time challenges, layout challenges.
Folks who'd absolutely get frustrated: People who want traditional scrabble board layouts only, no time challenges, no interest in collecting special bonuses.

Overall, a 4 star game -- subjective, I know, but then it either appeals to you or it doesn't. Try it -- I think you'll like it!

1.0 out of 5 stars journey to nowhere, March 14, 2009
This review is from: Scrabble Journey [Old Version] (CD-ROM)
I love scrabble, but this game is a disappointment. The rules are vague and the game is not challenging. Once you complete your journey you have no idea where you rank or how to improve. And what's the point of the trophies ??

The animation is pretty simplistic. The different locales you can travel to, consist of unusually shaped game boards with a starting point, and ending point and obstacles.
This game only allows you to play yourself.
If you get stuck there is a animated assistant which gives you hints. There is a problem. If you have left yourself no options on which to build a word, the assistant will tell you so and advise you to shuffle your tiles. This is the only option you have, even when there is no place to build a word off of. I shuffled my tiles a dozen times but there was no way to end the game.
There is no way to pause a game either and continue it later. This can be important since you earn bonus points based on how quickly you finish a game.

5.0 out of 5 stars Scrabble Journey, May 14, 2008
This review is from: Scrabble Journey [Old Version] (CD-ROM)
Was a little hesitant to purchase this game, however after tryng it, I fell in love with this version of scrabble. The journeys you take from country to country is exciting and challenging. I would refer anyone to this game if they love to spell and work the brain. I have gotten my mother addicted to this game and I think anyone who tries it will enjoy it just as much as we do. Definately spend the money, it is well worth it.

This pc game-Scrabble Journey - is not what I was expecting. I somehow thought it would be more like the original Scrabble game. I do not like the format and found it difficult to maneuver the letters when trying to form a word. Personally I found the concept ridiculous and no fun at all. I want the original Scrabble pc game only. I GAVE IT ONE STAR, BUT IN MY OPINION, it deserves a big ZERO stars. Very dissatisfied!! DO NOT ORDER THIS GAME!!

If you have played Scrabble until your index finger is calloused and now you're bored or if you want to introduce Scrabble to your kids this is great.

My wife loves Scrabble but finds the interface childish and clicking and dragging tiles cumbersome.

I found that you need the CD spinning noisily in the tray all the time. So i grabbed a clone of this on sourceforge changed it a bit to improve tile dragging now it's MUCH better with tiles that stick to the pointer until you click again. I love sharing source code. Too bad this game will always mistreat customers with annoying, noisy disk checks and have it's network play end soon after you have made a few friends online.

Why does Hasbro treat paying customers like thieves?
