4.0 out of 5 stars For the price, this is a no brainer.
Its not the greatest survival kit in the world, and if you're planning on surviving with just this kit for very long, you're probably in trouble.

2.0 out of 5 stars Disappointed
I ordered 12 of these as a give away for my Boy Scout Troop. I understand these were only $3 each but I (and the boys) were disappointed with the quality.

The good:

The whistle and compass work fine

The bad:

Over half would not open without the use of a pair of plyers. Maybe it was assembled before the gasket glue was dry...

Its not the greatest survival kit in the world, and if you're planning on surviving with just this kit for very long, you're probably in trouble.

That being said, a few years back my wife and I were camping with some family friends. One of our friend's daughters decided she wanted to go on a small hike, so her dad went with her away from our campsite off into the woods. 30 minutes went by.. and then an hour. Just as I was getting together some things to go looking for them, I could faintly hear his voice yelling our names. After another 10 minutes of shouting back and forth, we were able to find each other.

They'd gotten a little too far from camp, and within a few minutes trees blocked the view of our site. Venturing a little farther, getting a little turned around, and it became a dangerous situation, especially as night was coming on soon.

He told me he'd been yelling our names for the better part of the hour, and probably was not very far away, but voices don't travel through trees or hills well.

Since then, everybody in our family keeps one of these tied to them or around their necks at all times while camping. The compass works so-so, the flint is almost useless, and the mirror doesn't reflect very clearly, but the whistle is priceless, and the waterproof container keeps matches nice and dry - the two most important things to somebody thats lost. For kids, who can take off and get lost in just a matter of seconds, its an absolute must.

Another issue - nearly a quarter of them lost the flint on the side - it simply fell out as they were trying to unscrew the top.

Overall - Neat concept, but quality is lacking. I would not recommned purchasing this item.

This was even cheaper than it looked. It doesn't open so there's no place for matches, the flint is too small to be useful.

4.0 out of 5 stars Nothing fancy but as expected., December 23, 2011

Nothing fancy about this thing but honestly, I think everyone should have one on them on hikes, or in the car. Super cheap - why not?! The whistle works great, flint on the side, compass works as well, there is also a signal mirror on the underside of the cap that has the compass on it. I bought some real nice waterproof matches to put inside for good measure. Well worth the couple bucks it cost me.

4.0 out of 5 stars Handy Pocket Tool, October 16, 2011

Could be a useful survival tool for the price, keeping strike anywhere matches dry, small but accurate compass and loud whistle. I gave this one as a gift as I already carry one along with a few other survival implements that could be handy should I ever get lost in the woods? I do wish they wrapped a little more cord around it like the older used to have, rather than the lanyard and see little use for the hook sharpener.
