By Marc F.
I'm kind of a computer nerd, and I used to find it a hassle every time I had to load ALL of my software from SCRATCH. I got DriveClone Pro because it comes with Universal Restore at no additional cost - that's definitely its main appeal to me. The function is easy to use, and I'm pleased with the usability of the software in general. The main console clearly shows the different features, so it's easy to navigate through the functions. Everything is pretty much point and click.

Snapshots create system images really quickly, so backing up my work isn't tedious at all. I like that the product has a scheduler, so all of my backups can run automatically. I also set up email notification and receive updates about my backups that way. There are lots of other features that allow you to customize your backups pretty specific to your own needs which is really useful. With all the viruses floating around the internet, I get sort of a peace of mind knowing that I can restore my computer safely when I need to.

Complete backup takes a while to run, but that's understandable. System snapshots do what I need for now. Overall, I was pleasantly surprised with DriveClone Pro and would recommend it to anyone who is looking for backup and recovery software.

I am updating this review, and changing it to one star. One of the things that Fartsone can install on your computer is a 'snapshot' feature which can perform restore points similar to Windows restore points. This will install a splash screen boot program that can be invoked right after your computer's BIOS splash screen. WARNING, this can cause serious blue-screen-of-death errors that may not be recoverable. The ONLY reason I was able to recover from this is because I was also able to invoke an earlier Farstone restore point, which put everything back the way it was. Another reviewer who reviewed version 5 says that the snapshot feature installs it's own Master Boot Record, which is the problem. Also note the blue-screen-of-death errors reported by user "Backbutton" on this same page. I uninstalled the snapshot feature, and the problem went away. Farstone support was unable to provide me with a fix, or even own up to the problem. Speaking of Farstone support, they get a "F". They *might* respond *one* time with some one-sentence response. Any follow-ups questions from you are ignored.

Edit update (Nov 30th,2009): My computer's motherboard died in October, which caused me to buy a new Dell computer with Windows 7. So now I've had a chance to evaluate Drive Clone 6 across two computers. Some bad news. I've learned AGAIN to NOT install the snapshot feature which installs bootable software between the BIOS boot screen and Windows. On both computers, this caused random blue screen of death errors. In both cases, when I removed this feature the problem went away.

Also, before getting my new computer (with Windows 7) I emailed Farstone and asked them if DriveClone was compatible with Windows 7. I was told it was.

4.0 out of 5 stars Universal Restore March 9, 2009
I recently had to migrate a system to a different type of hardware. I created a universal restore image with DriveClone Pro 5.1 and unfortunately it was not successful at creating a working system. After contacting Farstone support, I was instructed to attempt to create the universal restore image with 6.0.
I created a Universal Restore image on to a DVD, and proceeded to restore. Initially, the console did not recognize the image on the DVD's. Due to the urgency in migrating the system, I proceeded to copy the image files to an external hard disk, launched the console again from the DVD, and attempted to restore. This time, DriveClone had no problem recognizing the image, and the restorable image was perfect - did not have any issues with the migration.

Had I not experienved the need for a workaround (reading from the DVD), I would have given the product a solid 5 starts, since its restore was perfect. Farstone tech support is aware of the issue I experienced and is trying to duplicate it in order to resolve it. Overall an excellent product.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great tool for the IT professional July 6, 2009
I've been looking for a replacement for Ghost for years. This product is great! I can make standard images for each of our desktop and laptop models and restore images in minutes when I need to clean and prepare a system for a new user. The bootable CD even lets you load network and hard disk drivers before you begin the image restore in case your system has unusual hardware (such as Promise SAS controllers, etc.) and can restore images from a network drive or an external USB hard disk.

Drive Clone Pro also lets you set up the computer so that users can initiate a clean restore themselves, by hitting space bar during Windows boot up. This is ideal for lab or test systems.

You do need to install the software on the computer before you can create an image. If you want to create and restore images without installing any software, get Drive Clone Express. Everything runs from the boot CD.

Overall, this is a reliable, easy to use product that can significantly reduce the workload of the IT department at any company.
