5.0 out of 5 stars Redtailed Approves
A delightful find. This is the third book in the young adult/teen series "Animorphs" in which the character Tobias permanently becomes a Red-tailed Hawk. The Animorphs story is generally very good and the characters interesting and rich. The author manages to write about the animal aspects in a believable way. I usually find transformation and shapeshifting stories to have story lines that make the whole point of transformation become lost. Applegate keeps the adventure intact by being descriptive, entertaining, and involving. This series is a must-read for those who enjoy animals, shapeshifting, and adventure.

The BEST!!Rachel and Tobias are my favorite characters. And this Book is Almost all about Rachel and Tobias!
This is the story.....
In the first book(after the battle)Tobias discovers that he is trapped in hawk morph forever...As he tries to ajust to his New life he has to deal with the Yeerks.
While flying one day Tobias thinks he sees something move across the sky,or at least he thinks he does. After some investigation the Animorphs discover the it is a ship,a very large ship,Infact,It's a YEERK SHIP!!After the Animorph have A close Call(they ALMOST get trapped as wolves),Tobias starts to Realize that he will be a hawk forever, that he will never be Human again...Tobias Goes of for a few days and has to deal with his first kill,it soon becomes too much for him And he tries to kill Himself....

Fnd out the rest and Read this GREAT book!!

4.0 out of 5 stars It's a bird. It's a plane. It's Tobias..., August 24, 2004
This review is from: The Encounter (Animorphs#3) (Paperback)
Tobias isn't like the other Animorphs. When they're done fighting Yeerks or flying through the sky, they just morph back from their animal bodies to their regular bodies. But Tobias stayed in hawk morph for longer than two hours. Now, he's going to be stuck as a hawk forever. Tobias is trying to deal with this pain, but nothing can make him feel better about it. Especially when he starts to feel attracted to a female hawk--even though he's a human on the inside.

Jake, Rachel, Cassie, and Marco are trying to help him get used to life as a hawk. But they're busy worrying about a gigantic Yeerk ship, and a new secret discovered--the Yeerks need lots of water from Earth for them all to survive. The kids use this information to morph fish and get inside the Yeerk ship. But when they get trapped, it's up to Tobias to save them--even though he's not human.

THE ENCOUNTER is the first Tobias book, and Tobias books are one of the best of the Animorphs. I thought that K.A. Applegate described Tobias's struggle through life as a hawk very well. The only problem that I had with this book was that it was a little boring. The only real action of the book was towards the end. But it's a good-read for Animorphs fans, and a must-read for all Tobias fans.

5.0 out of 5 stars A book that made me stay wide awake after bedtime., November 12, 2010

This review is from: The Encounter (Animorphs#3) (Paperback)
How would I describe this book? 1. Exciting? 2. Humorous? 3. Intriguing? 4. All of above? Of course, it is number 4. This books comes to many series from 1 to 54, totally original, has a high rate of addiction. Once read it you will experience the world of fantasy and aliens, lasers, and imagination.

In the first book there were four kids enjoying their lives when an alien fighter appeared before them. From then their lives changed from normal kids, to destine to save the earth warriors destined to save the earth. This book, the third one describes the view of a human mind hawk Tobias. He discovers a cloaked ship going somewhere in the mountains and tracks it. They noticed from then, the Yeerks have one major weakness: they need earth to support their mother ship with water, and oxygen. Their plan was to turn off the "cloaking device" so the whole world will know Yeerks are invading the earth and get it done with. While the Animorphs were planning for their "day" Tobias runs in trouble with himself.

Back in the first book, they, the Animorphs, gets trapped in a Yeerk pool and they barely escapes. However, Tobias stayed in his hawk morph for too long and becomes what Andlites calls a "nothlit". You see, the power to morph is a truly wonderful gift from the Andlite. Also, it is a deadly curse. You become what animal you touch, but stay in a morph too long and get trapped in it. Forever. Okay, let's stick to business. Tobias is a nothlit, and he is having trouble. His mind is Tobias, but his hawk body is a hawk. His body's instinct tells him to kill and eat mouse, and he keeps saying no. At list, to the second book. In this book, he finally surrenders to his animal instincts. He hunts mouse, gets attracted to a female hawk, and accepts its behavior, all before the "the day". The rest, I think, you should read it yourself. Like, I shouldn't tell the entire summary and make less fun of this book! Over all, I think it is a good book and everyone reading my review SHOULD read it.

5.0 out of 5 stars The third Animorphs book . . . from the viewpoint of a HAWK?, November 1, 1998
By A Customer
This review is from: The Encounter (Animorphs#3) (Paperback)
When the Andalite Prince landed on Earth and gave the Animorphs their morphing abilities, he gave them one cardinal rule - NEVER stay in morph for more than two hours. But Tobias was trapped when they attacked the Yeerk pool - and now it's four human Animorphs and a hawk . . . Tobias thought that he was gaining control over the hawk's instincts - but then he kills - can he ever really be human again? Or should he just forget he was ever a human and give in to the hawk - forever?

This book was great. It deals with Tobias, the third member of the Animorphs, as he struggles to adapt to his new life as a nothlit - human trapped in morph. More heart-rending than the others, but even without the slushy stuff, it's still a great read.

5.0 out of 5 stars The Best, January 8, 2000
This review is from: The Encounter (Animorphs#3) (Paperback)
This is the best animorphs book, sad but full of action too. you should definetly read no 1 before you read this or it will spoil no 1 and you won't understand some bits. it doesn't matter if you read no 2 or not. my favorite part of this book is when they almost get stuck as wolves and when tobias flies through the mall. I would reccommend this book to anyone as i think there is something for everyone in it.

5.0 out of 5 stars One of the sadder titles, July 21, 2010
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: The Encounter (Animorphs#3) (Paperback)
This is one of the sadder of the series, I wont say why as it is a quick read and you really don't need much to get the whole story. As always this series is great and an awesome concept, I wish it would have been 10 times as popular when I was young so the TV series would have stayed around. But these are awesome books, if you think you are too old for them get one for your child, niece, or nephew and let them enjoy.
