The best element of Chard's contemporary romantic fiction is the unusual profession of her heroine. Kathy Webster is a detective with the British police force, a fact that her fiance, an accountant, abhors. He hates the irregular hours, potential hazards, and most all, Kathy's enthusiasm for her work. When she must choose between moving to Newcastle with Tim, after he receives a promotion, and going to Spain on undercover work, Spain wins. The dangerous assignment involves uncovering evidence on the mastermind behind a string of robberies in London, building scams in Spain, drug smuggling, and other crimes. Despite Webster's being taken hostage, her partner is shot, and her best friend's husband turns out to be the gangster's right-hand man, the plot is far too predictable to be exciting. Still, the book follows a tried-and-true romantic formula and offers a unique perspective for those weary of historical romances.
