About the Author

Nubia DuVall Wilson graduated from Barnard College, Columbia University with a B.A. in English. She launched her journalism career in New York at Real Simple magazine. Her editorial work has covered various topics, such as travel, consumer products, women's lifestyle, and health. Prior to working at Real Simple, Nubia lived in Taipei, Taiwan, where she penned numerous short stories about her humorous encounters with the locals and expats. Inspired by the memorable characters from her travels in Asia, she started documenting humorous social interactions on the subway and in the city upon her return to New York. Seven years later, the very best of these stories were compiled into her first book, Encounters with Strangers. Read more at www.encounterswithstrangers.com.

I'm not a huge fan on non-fiction work where it's didactic and blasé, and even a less fan of short stories, but what I do like is stories about people's real lives. This book drew me right in. I've been to New York more times than I can count and I thought I had enough crazy experiences of my own that I didn't need to know any more. Well, I'm so glad I bought this because the intricacies of the author connecting, or trying not to connect, with the random people in the city opened up the city in a way I never saw before. ‬

‪I think the best thing I loved was the narrative style. It reads like a progression through life, like real life. It's the interactions between the author and the randomness that is the most readable point. Nubia paints a good scene, it's a scene that comes alive.‬

Sometimes because it's more of a collection of stories it may for some people feel disjointed but I think for most the transition from one story to the other would be quite easy to follow and she divides it into sections such as subway stories and stories above ground (not in the subway).‬

‪The best thing is that it's just so damn funny and this is where the author has her strength. Actually I give it 4 1/2 stars but the rating system won't let me do that. I would recommend this book to anyone who wants a nice light funny read about a great city with some crazy people.

It's not often you come across a book that's both intimate, funny, and brutally honest. Well this is it! I was a fan of this blog long before I found out it was being made into a book, and Nubia is as always an amazing writer with the ability to tell a story and paint humanity at our worst which is often our funniest. If you want a read that's literally going to make you 'LOL', this book is for you!

These bite-size insights into the weird and wonderful world of NYC will make you smile, laugh and cringe at the eccentricity of its inhabitants.

I found myself reminiscing and saying "I remember that" or "I've seen that person/place/thing before."

Great read, wildly entertaining and the lesson that your parents never taught you about talking to strangers.

This book is the perfect casual read for those who can relate to those daily adventures one experiences while living in New York or any city. Since it is simply a collection of short stories, it's easy to pick up and read anywhere. Having once lived in Manhattan and being a huge NYC fan, this read has been so enjoyable and has made me reminisce about my own experiences and memories. I have read several stories out loud to my friends. DuVall's writing voice and style is witty and hilarious and challenges me to think about my own attitude while having encounters with strangers.

The book will be a perfect gift for my city friends this holiday season.

i received the book free through goodreads. I really enjoyed this book. It was detailed. I could almost picture myself on the train. The stories are nice and short and to the point . It is great for a person who doesn't have alot of time to sit down and read. I really enjoyed this book and i hope she makes another edition.

Edit: I read the paperback version. Not the Kindle Version

Very entertaining series of vignettes, mostly of daily encounters in and around NYC subway system. The author kept a journal and began a blog to share her stories, then turned them into a book. Easy, fun read.

my grandad used to ride the bus all over the city (bus transfers were free), spent the day people watching. he said there was no funnier entertainment. ms Duvall Wilson is a good reporter of human nature.

I liked the short stories because they were easy and quick to read. I especially liked the NYC stories since I have been there. Some of the stories were fun and entertaining but others were not that special and seemed like normal, everyday life.
