Book Description

May 1, 1998
Science fiction and fantasy are among the most popular of all literary genres, but until now Australia has had no work that records the depths and significance of its contribution.

This unique and comprehensive book will become the standard reference for students, both Australian and international, of the rapidly-growing genre of Australian science fiction and fantasy.

Entries cover authors, book and story titles, important fanzines, important sub-genres and works published electronically. It categorises works for adults, young adults and children and includes essays and articles by distinguished Australian scholars and writers in the field.

Editorial Reviews

Review

'. . . remarkably comprehensive and astonishingly up-to-date, with lots of fascinating little essays.' - -- John Marsden, Herald Sun

'As the first and only guide of its kind to be published in Australia, it is the perfect handbook for anyone interested in Australian speculative fiction of all kinds. Whether one is new to the genre and is seeking some guidance or an old hand checking what has been included, or simply interested in a general anthropological sort of way, there's much to detain and interest the reader. . . a landmark in Australian literary history and publishing.' - -- Sophie Masson, The Australian

'This book . . . is an excellent and interesting resource, with alphabetical listings of writers and their works, plus essays on various topics, such as indigenous mythology, dark fantasy, sf and f magazines, and much more. Highly recommended.' - -- Sophie Masson, New Englander

'Worth purchasing for the feature articles on early Australian SF and fantasy, comics, radio, television, dark fantasy and feminism alone, but one gets so much more. . . Useful and entertaining, this has appeal beyond a specialist readership.' - -- Kerry White, bookphilenewsletter --This text refers to the Hardcover edition.

5.0 out of 5 stars Australian SF Reader, July 31, 2007
This review is from: The MUP Encyclopaedia of Australian Science Fiction & Fantasy (Paperback)
It is pretty much the only one, and how likely is it another one of these gets published? Well, there is one 'overview' style book, too, but that is very expensive. If you ever see this cheap, don't hesitate, that is for sure.

Otherwise, if you can find it, just get it, it is basically invaluable, and I pull it out frequently, and have used it in more than one project. The first time I saw this, I was quite surprised that something like this book had even come into existence.
