Book Description

September 17, 1981 0195029585 978-0195029581 First
This indispensable guide is the reference book for anyone interested in musical film. Its fact-packed, alphabetically-arranged pages include over 1600 entries covering not only the most important actors, composers, lyricists, directors, choreographers, and producers but also the most memorable songs and best-loved films.
Beginning in 1927 with The Jazz Singer--the first part-sound motion picture--the film entries provide brief plot outlines, behind-the-scenes information, all the songs from the particular film with the names of the singers (including songs ultimately cut from the film), roles played by the particular actors and actresses, plus names of composers, lyricists, directors, and collaborators, and much more.
The volume also features listings of Motion Picture Academy nominations and winners, British and American film title changes, who played whom in what films, and a general bibliography and discography. Now in a newly revised paperback edition, it offers updated information on the people included in the book, additional films under existing entries, and the most recent Academy Award winners.

This review is from: Encyclopaedia of the Musical Film (Hardcover)
This is a wonderful reference for anyone interested in musical film. It has all the major actors, actresses, directors, composers and lyricists. If, for example, you see an old Doris Day movie and wonder what else she was in, this book lists all her musical films. You can even discover if your favorite old-time actor e.g. Cary Grant, made any musicals. In addition, the author has given us some biographical information about the most popular performers such as the most popular songs they introduced and if they had a successful partnership with another performer e.g. Astaire-Rogers. All in all, a wonderful treasure trove for the musical aficionado.

5.0 out of 5 stars FAR MORE THAN JUST A WORK OF REFERENCE, November 13, 2010
I bought this as a work of reference, but it's far more than that. It covers films, songwriters, performers and singers, and is eminently readable, being embellished throughout with background information and anecdotes. It should be sought out by anyone with an interest in the songs and history of the silver screen.
