This book still has a lot to offer., February 7, 2005
This review is from: Encyclopaedia of Sea Warfare (A Salamander book) (Hardcover)
First published in 1975, this book takes the reader from those first Ironclad ships - i.e. those first battleships not made entirely from wood, to what was, in 1975, the latest in nuclear powered vessels. Because the history of those 100 years cannot be changed, the information in this book is as relevant today as it was when first published. And what an interesting period it was too.
From HMS Devastation - the first sea-going warship without sails, this book skilfully takes the reader through each significant technological development and major sea battle from the late 19th Century to the height of the Cold War in 1975. Along the way, we read of the incredible arms race between Britain and Germany and the famous encounters of World War One through the dominance of the world seas by the USA and it's major successes during World War Two, and on, as I say, to those stand-off positions of the Cold War.
This book is a true encyclopedia containing the most thoroughly researched text coupled with a most comprehensive compilation of photographs, drawings, illustrations and maps. And all that from a small number of expert authors who enjoy reputations of the highest international standing.
For those who may have read this book, it really is worth another visit. For those who have not, there is much in here from which to learn and the book should not be overlooked because of the passage of time.
