An Irreplaceable Treasury of Drawing, and Draughtsmenship., October 9, 2011
This review is from: Encyclopaedia of drawing: Materials, technique, and style (Hardcover)
I've had this book since it came out in 82; It has been a constant source of inspiration and information.
.
As the Title suggests the book is an Encyclopedia, and presents descriptions of various techniques in alphabetical order; and that's useful; but that's about 1% of why you want this book.
.
What this book absolutely is,
Is a collection of Drawings across a wide variety of styles and Techniques; Selected by a person with both a Passion for Drawing as an Art in it's own right, (and not just a means to create studies for Paintings, and or sculpture) and the depth of knowledge to do the work Justice.
.
I am absolutely certain that I would myself never have encountered half of the drawings in this book in my life through any other volume; or venue. There are drawings in the book, I still cannot find as online images, even though they were created by well know artists; such as Augustus John's "Woman with Crazy eyes"; Which is utterly haunting by the way, and a wonderfully Ethereal Pencil Drawing, well worth the price all by itself.
.
If you love Art created with the Pencil, or Charcoal, or 'Crayon'; or if you create your own I cannot recommend this book to you too highly, it is a constant and invaluable reminder of what is possible with-in this discipline; what august company you keep; and how things get done. Blessings, BB.
