From School Library Journal
Grade 9 Up-Virtually every entry has been updated for this second edition (Facts On File, 1991). For some articles, this means the addition of one or two sentences; others have been expanded to include pertinent information on a team, athlete, stadium, or an award through early 2002. The 150 new entries focus on individuals; games; some extreme sports; and recently built arenas, ballparks, and stadiums and the renaming of existing venues. Not every hall of fame member or Olympic Gold Medal winner will be found here; Hickok's goal was to include information on athletes of historic importance or those representative of an era. The sporting-event entries place an emphasis on the history of the game or contest and how it has changed through time. Every North American city with a professional sports franchise and obsolete sports of historic importance are also covered. See-also references appear throughout. The font and headings are easier to read in this edition and although many of the black-and-white illustrations are the same, a few have been resized. This accessible volume will be useful for students researching the history of sports, as a starting point for biographical information, and for its Web and postal addresses.

From Library Journal
This reference focuses on the evolution of sports, sports government, administration, and other issues of interest pertaining to sports in North America. Entries are arranged alphabetically and vary in length from 25 to 3000 words. The contents are divided into several broad categories ranging from history, biography, and key events to awards, cities, stadiums, and organizations. Included is an index, bibliography, see also notes, and photographs. Notable omissions are entries for Nolan Ryan, Wayne Gretzky, and Pete Rose, although their names are mentioned briefly in sections such as "Awards." Hickok has developed a reference document that is easy to use and provides quick access for enthusiasts of all ages. Recommended for public libraries. (Photos and index not seen.)-- L.R.
