Book Description

Encyclopedia March 2000

What's before you is a sign of Australian times spread across four decades of musicians ...It's their history and it's your history as well. Rediscover how The Angels through to The Zoot got from A-Z, and how you travelled along with them. And if you've enver travelled their route before, then buckle up and enjoy the ride because all the signposts you'll need are right before your eyes.' Richard Kingsmill, Triple J The Encyclopedia of Rock and Pop' is the definitive guide to the bands and artists who moulded the shape of Australian popular music from the 1950s to the 1990s. Editorial Reviews

From Library Journal

Encompassing Australia's popular music scene from 1957 to 1997, this work may be of interest to those who want to know more about AC/DC, INXS, Men at Work, Olivia Newton-John, and other, lesser-known Aussies. Primarily an A-Z reference of Down Under's pop music personalities and groups, the tome also provides a brief history of the musical development in the country. The 870-plus entries comprise such relevant information as career overview, band personnel, line-up changes, records released, other major events and achievements, and album/CD discographies. McFarlane, a rock journalist, writes solidly, and one will find a surprising number of Australian-American connections. Nevertheless, this work is too highly specialized for most American library patrons, who can get information about most Australian acts from more general or American-oriented music reference works. An optional purchase for all but the most inclusive popular music collections.DDavid M. Turkalo, Suffolk Univ., Law Sch. Lib., Boston

4.0 out of 5 stars You will became a Aussie Music Fan after this book!, July 9, 2001
This review is from: The Encyclopedia of Australian Rock and Pop (Paperback)
Aussie fan!.. I am a kind of a Oil Head, I followed Midnight Oil about 4 years ago, to the west coast tour. I knew little about Australian music, only that Midnight Oil and Men at Work. While reading the book I began looking for bands like Easybeats, Slim Dusty, Crowded House. I found out about a song called "And the Ban Played Waltzing Matilda", and that's were I found out that I need to go over there and make a tour of the outback and Alice Springs.
