Encyclopedia Brown is a great character. I think the books are good for both boys and girls. I read them as a child and I loved them. They help to develop problem solving skills AND they are good stories.

This series of intriguing who-done-it books has captivated my nine year old grandson for months now. The books are well written and suspenseful. He devours each book and can't wait to read the next one in the seties. Encyclopedia Brown stands the test of time.

I remember reading these when I was a kid and was glad to see Encyclopedia back with some new stories.
They are great because they make you CONCENTRATE on the stories to find the clues to solve the mysteries. My son and I take turns, each reading a page aloud, until we get to the end of the story then we discuss what we think happened and why. Sometimes we are right and sometimes we are wrong. It's alot of fun and it helps him learn to "find the details" in the stories. If you have a grade/middle school child, I'd highly recommend any of these books.

Good exercises in logic for the young mind,
By Charles Ashbacher (Marion, Iowa United States) - See all my reviews (TOP 500 REVIEWER) (VINE VOICE) (HALL OF FAME REVIEWER)
This review is from: Encyclopedia Brown Shows the Way (Mass Market Paperback)
Leroy "Encyclopedia" Brown is a hero for young people that is much more realistic than others such as "The Hardy Boys" or "Tom Swift Jr." All offer adventures for the young minds to experience, but Encyclopedia's adventures are more in keeping with the actual experiences of a young man.
Encyclopedia solves mysteries that take place in a young person's life, for example how did one kid manage to con another out of a possession. These things happen on a regular basis in the life of a child, they do not solve bank robberies or invent spacecraft. This book contains ten short mysteries where the reader experiences the clues with Encyclopedia. Once all the information is presented, Encyclopedia announces that he knows the identity of the culprit(s) and the story ends with a question for the reader. The solution to the mystery appears in a section at the end of the book. Logical reasoning skills are some of the most valuable in that you use them on a daily basis when making small and large decisions. The mysteries posed to Encyclopedia require some basic logic and knowledge background and in all cases enough clues are given to solve the puzzle. The level of those skills needed here are within the grasp of the late elementary school student, making this book an excellent exercise in sharpening the young mind.

An enjoyable book,

The book was nice to read and the mysteries were kind of "always happening" like not so big mysteries, but some were tough to solve and I enjoyed reading this book.
