Editorial Reviews

From Library Journal

According to the publisher, the NCAA basketball tournament or "March Madness," is the single biggest sporting event in the United States, viewed by more people than the Superbowl and World Series. Hoop enthusiasts will relish this cornucopia of data. Regardless of whether the reader is a seasoned armchair veteran or a novice fan, The Encyclopedia of College Basketball is a guaranteed three-pointer. Douchant, former basketball editor of The Sporting News and author of Tourney Time (Masters Pr., 1993), declares there are numerous encyclopedias on professional sports, but nothing on college basketball. Hence, the rationale for compiling 18 chapters of historical facts, statistics, and trivia in addition to coach, player, and team profiles. Notable features include coverage of women's basketball, school directories, conference breakdowns, plus detailed statistics on the NCAA tournament from 1938 to the present. This definitive guide is complete with photos, maps, index, and sidebars, and contains everything the reader needs to know in one convenient volume. Highly recommended for sports collections.?L.R. From Booklist

From the introduction written by basketball nut Dick Vitale to the comprehensive index, this encyclopedia covers the world of college basketball from the beginnings by Naismith to Arkansas' defeat of Duke in the NCAA tournament in March 1994. Extensive sections cover the history of college basketball, the NCAA tournaments, the National Invitation Tournament, players, coaches, women's basketball, small colleges, the Olympic games, plus a conference directory, school directory, NCAA awards and records, and statistical trivia. About 200 black-and-white photographs of players and coaches round out the coverage,

This work functions on a number of levels as an encyclopedia, a directory, a statistical compendium, a chronology, and a history of the sport. The excellent chapter on women's basketball is a most welcome addition to the work. One of the most interesting sections is on college players who went on to find fame in other sports, politics, business, or entertainment. The index ties it all together by including individuals, associations, leagues, and teams. It does exclude box scores, statistical boxes, long name lists, and general statistics. Photographs are denoted by italics, and boldface type refers to entire sections.

A number of books on college basketball have been published recently. The list includes Final Four Records 1939-1991: The History of the Division 1 Men's Basketball Tournament (Triumph, 1992); Basketball Biographies: 434 U.S. Players, Coaches and Contributions to the Game, 1891-1990 (McFarland, 1991); and The Encyclopedia of the NCAA Basketball Tournament: The Complete Independent Guide to College Basketball's Championship Event (Dell, 1990). Although sections of Douchant overlap these three works, he gives broader coverage in more areas and all in one reasonably priced volume.

The Encyclopedia of College Basketball is an excellent reference work. It complements the three titles listed above and is a recommended purchase for any sports and recreation collection at any level from high-school to public and university libraries.
