5.0 out of 5 stars Very well done, May 11, 2004

This review is from: The Encyclopedia of Daytime Television: Everything You Ever Wanted to Know About Daytime TV but Didn't Know Where to Look! from American Bandstand, As the World Turns, and Bugs Bunny, to (Paperback)
For a book that covers so many disparate types of daytime programs (game shows, soap operas, sports, cartoons and kids' shows, and so on), the volume is remarkably accurate, well-written and heavily researched. You'd think the author was an expert on every genre. Maybe he is, but more likely, he just cared enough to get everything right. How refreshing.

I came across this softcover book at a used bookstore in the early 2000's and it has been my companion piece to everything I have ever wanted to know about the daytime television industry. This book is not just for the everyday fan of afternoon TV, but it's a wonderful piece of work that Wesley Hyatt has put together for anyone interested in working in daytime television as it gives a reader an insight into what makes or breaks a TV show, why certain programs endure for more than 40 years, yet some fail after only a few months.

The book was published way back in 1997 and I am so hoping Hyatt updates this book to reflect the changing world of television, especially that of network serials as more and more are being cancelled in favour of cheap reality programming.

"The Encyclopedia of Daytime Television" covers soap operas, game shows, talk shows, early morning shows like "Today", and even Saturday morning cartoons. Broadcast dates are included, whether the show was broadcast in black and white and in color, time slots, and important detailed info on all programs broadcast on television during the daylight hours since the early '50's, including some rare syndicated series.

My favorite part of the book are the sections on soaps as important storyline details are included, who played who when, what event made a soap a hit and what elements ultimately killed a long-running show. There are also some very rare black and white photos included.

The only argument I have with the book is I wished there had been a section dedicated to the all-important Nielsen ratings for all shows season by season, but that was not included.

A great read and a great addition to your home library.

This is a great book about Daytime TV. I only wished that there had been a more updated version printed.

It has tons of shows that aired on daytime TV. It covers Cartoons, Children' programs, Game shows, News shows, Soap operas, Sports programs, Talk shows and more. It gives you show air dates, a synopsis of the plot, its principle cast members and other pertinent info about the show.

The writting is small and there is a lot of material packed into the 516 pages. Get a copy while you still can! I love this book!
