A great find for hard-core doo-wop fans,
By Casey Dunn (Chicago, Illinois USA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Encyclopedia of Doo Wop 2 (Audio CD)
I have been a doo-wop nut since 1972 and this set has opened my eyes to many gems I had never heard before! Sure, there are a few clunkers like always but overall this collection is great, mellow early rhythm and blues heaven. Best of all it almost always stays true to the Doo-Wop five voice vocal harmony ideal. Along with 78's, LP's, 45's and many, many CD's I have the three Rhino boxes and can tell you that this box set is a real find! Compared to the Rhino boxes this set is almost as good as #1, at least as good as #2 and definitely better than #3! Great wooden box packaging! The music is mostly east coast, which I consider a plus. The booklet of "liner notes" is great but is only the beginning, in that this "encyclopedia" comes with a very good paperback book, too. It's called "They All Sang On The Corner" and stands alone as a great Doo-Wop reference. I have owned "Doo-Wop: The Forgotten Third Of Rock 'n Roll" for many years now and I still enjoyed "They All Sang ...". The price of this set is pretty steep and will keep all but the true fanatics away but I have forgotten the cost and enjoyed this four-disc set immensely! In fact, I'm buying another one right now as a gift!

A Great Collection,

This review is from: Encyclopedia of Doo Wop 2 (Audio CD)
The Encyclopedia of Doowop, Vol 2 has some well known and some rare group harmony songs of the 1950s. It is a good mix of ballads and up-tempo songs performed by some great groups. I would recommend this collection to any fan of this genre.
