Book Description

December 31, 1999
A complete illustrated directory is finally available that shows and describes nearly 300 types of German battle tanks, armored cars, self-propelled guns, and semi-tracked vehicles manufactured and put into service from 1933 to 1945. Only recently have the records of the manufacturers been made public, so never before could you know just how many of each model were available, along with accurate dates of their production and mobilization. Historic photos identify features of each vehicle type, including uncommon variants. Captions are packed with accurate details on designations given by the German Army General Staff: alternative designations, manufacturing and development history, chassis numbers, engine capacity, fuel, coolants, gearbox performance, speed and range, armament, armor material and thickness, and service record. 272 pages, 1,000 b/w illus., 8 3/4 x 11.

5.0 out of 5 stars An Indispensable Guide to WW2 German AFVs, October 7, 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: Encyclopedia Of German Tanks Of World War Two: The Complete Illustrated Dictionary of German Battle Tanks,Armoured Cars, Self-Propelled Guns and Semi-Track (Paperback)
This has got to be the best one volume reference on German armored fighting vehicles of WW2. I love the wealth of material presented--for each major class of vehicles, there are entries for subvariants, different marks (ausf.), and modified vehicles. For example, under PzKpfw IV, you would find separate entries for all marks from A through J, then entries Jagdpanzer IV, Brummbar, Mobelwagen, etc. Also included are all the armored cars, half-tracks, and other vehicles used by Wehrmacht and Waffen-SS. Each entry is accompanied by wealth of detailed stats and operational history. This book is a must for any WW2 military history buff!

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent source of reference, June 22, 2004

This review is from: Encyclopedia Of German Tanks Of World War Two: The Complete Illustrated Dictionary of German Battle Tanks,Armoured Cars, Self-Propelled Guns and Semi-Track (Paperback)
This book remains one of the best sources of reference regarding German military vehicles during the Second World War. However, it should not be mistaken like some of the previous reviewers that this book is some sort of history book on the German forces. If anyone wishes to read how well the Panther or a Tiger did in combat, read else where. This book remains a data reference source. In this book, you will find all you ever want to find on the technical military data of all individual German military vehicles and their different model types. I found the information to be highly useful in almost every usage I get out of it, as a historian, wargamer, modeller and even as a film reviewer.

The book claims to be a definitive book on the German military vehicles and for once, this is not an over hype. It would be hard to find another book which hold this much information and data on all the individual German military vehicles as this. I would considered this book as one of the mandatory books in any World War II historian's library.

(In clarification, this book covered all the combat vehicles which served with the German military. It doesn't covered vehicles like Schwimmwagen or Kubelwagen or regular army truck.)

5.0 out of 5 stars Without equal, January 4, 2001
This review is from: Encyclopedia Of German Tanks Of World War Two: The Complete Illustrated Dictionary of German Battle Tanks,Armoured Cars, Self-Propelled Guns and Semi-Track (Paperback)
This reference is without peer. For the enthusiast, gamer, professional historian, or anyone else with an interest, this is by far the most complete, interesting, and authoritative book ever published on German AFVs of the period. Exceedingly well researched, extremely well illustrated. Wonderful data on construction, performance, manufacturing history, operational history, and unit markings. Why, the appendices alone are worth twice the price of the book. Purchase it now before it goes out of print again.
