Book Description

October 7, 2008
Susan Pickering Rothamel, author of the best-selling Encyclopedia of Scrapbook Tools and Techniques (Sterling/Chapelle, 2005), now turns her A-to-Z eye to another popular papercraft: greeting cards. With its detailed definitions of terms, tools, materials, and techniques; illustrated how-to instructions; and hundreds of handmade cards from leading artists, this will become the must-have visual reference for anyone interested in the craft.
Photographs of delightful greeting cards appear on every spread, along with step-by-step pictures of key skills. Sidebars on leading card makers discuss the techniques for which they’re celebrated, from Dee Gruenig’s rubber-stamp designs to Alli Bartkowski’s quilling.

Editorial Reviews

From Booklist

Artist and author Rothamel’s offering is appealing. It is a one-stop annotated and illustrated dictionary of greeting card information, whether the subject is mechanics (accordion fold, wrinkling); how-to’s (past paper, thermal embossing); arcane bytes (deltiology is the art of collecting postcards); or relevant tips (the use and safety of craft knives). Although the book is comprehensive in scope, no one entry is featured in complete detail; a good addition would have been bibliographic citations (for more information). Still, the author provides a good overview of the craft along with profiles of 14 practitioners, a historical time line, and advice for the wannabe professional (such as card submission and composition guidelines). --Barbara Jacobs

Review

“The mother of all paper arts books...It really is a bible for those of us who just love the paper arts. The techniques are vast, yet well explained and illustrated...This book is concise, easy to follow, and well thought out.”  —FaveCrafts.com

"The Encyclopedia of Greeting Card Tools & Techniques is set up alphabetically with every term connected with card making explained. I really enjoyed the frequent artist profiles that are associated with a specific term that the artist specializes in. They tell a little about their expertise with that particular medium and show several examples of their work. These interesting spotlights also gave the encyclopedia a more personal feel. Beautiful, vivid photos of cards fill every page, where they are used as examples of different card making methods. Die cutting, gilding, embossing and embellishing are just a few of the many, many effects demonstrated...The book also includes some helpful extras, like a list of holidays around the world, quotes to add to your cards and places to purchase supplies. The Encyclopedia of Greeting Card Tools & Techniques offers both the beginner and the more experienced card maker an opportunity to learn about all the possible greeting card techniques from the basic to the more intricate." —Cute Everything

5.0 out of 5 stars Hundreds of inspiring card ideas, September 19, 2008
This review is from: The Encyclopedia of Greeting Card Tools & Techniques (Hardcover)
Clocking in at more than 300 pages, this inspiring reference book from Sue Pickering Rothamel includes great, precise definitions of an encyclopedic range of card-making terms and, more importantly, hundreds of card images from a wide range of artists. Processes such as thermal embossing and stenciling are explained in short how-tos, an interesting history of card-making timeline is presented, and extensive card-sentiment suggestions are offered in the appendix. But make no mistake: The colorful cards, presented in a clean layout on bright white pages, are what make this wonderful volume an absolute delight and treasure-trove for artists and lay folk alike who are looking for ideas to personalize their cards and correspondence.

3.0 out of 5 stars A general purpose reference book, April 22, 2011
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: The Encyclopedia of Greeting Card Tools & Techniques (Hardcover)
This books starts with a history of Greeting Cards. Techniques and tools are then presented in alphabetic order, from A to Z in true encyclopedia fashion. It covers a vast array of tools and techniques. It also includes some bios of some greeting card artist.

Unlike other card / crafting encyclopedias, it is very general and does not provide very detailed, step-by-step instructions to produce cards for each technique. It does try to provide a picture for most of the topics mentioned.

So although okay to browse for general knowledge, it is not my go-to book for ideas or how to do something.

5.0 out of 5 stars Loved it!! Great inspiration for making my own cards, January 18, 2009
This review is from: The Encyclopedia of Greeting Card Tools & Techniques (Hardcover)
I absolutely LOVE this book and it is a welcome addition to my current book collection. These cards are more than just crafts; many are works of art that I wouldn't hesitate to frame and hang in my home. The photography is especially beautiful and the cards and techniques provide great ideas for making my own cards. I can't wait to check out other books by Miss Pickering Rothamel.
