5.0 out of 5 stars Hundreds of inspiring card ideas, September 19, 2008
This review is from: The Encyclopedia of Greeting Card Tools & Techniques (Hardcover)
Clocking in at more than 300 pages, this inspiring reference book from Sue Pickering Rothamel includes great, precise definitions of an encyclopedic range of card-making terms and, more importantly, hundreds of card images from a wide range of artists. Processes such as thermal embossing and stenciling are explained in short how-tos, an interesting history of card-making timeline is presented, and extensive card-sentiment suggestions are offered in the appendix. But make no mistake: The colorful cards, presented in a clean layout on bright white pages, are what make this wonderful volume an absolute delight and treasure-trove for artists and lay folk alike who are looking for ideas to personalize their cards and correspondence.

This books starts with a history of Greeting Cards. Techniques and tools are then presented in alphabetic order, from A to Z in true encyclopedia fashion. It covers a vast array of tools and techniques. It also includes some bios of some greeting card artist.

Unlike other card / crafting encyclopedias, it is very general and does not provide very detailed, step-by-step instructions to produce cards for each technique. It does try to provide a picture for most of the topics mentioned.

So although okay to browse for general knowledge, it is not my go-to book for ideas or how to do something.

5.0 out of 5 stars Something for everyone!, January 17, 2009

This review is from: The Encyclopedia of Greeting Card Tools & Techniques (Hardcover)
It was hard to wait for this book to get published once I learned it was in the works! It was all I hoped for and more! The history is fascinating and the tidbits throughout the book refreshing! There are cards for beginners, someone with only a little time to make cards and someone with alot of time to make cards. Even those who have been making cards a long time will find something new in here. The photos, illustrations and directions are invaluable to a visual learner like me, the only thing better would be an actual cardmaking workshop! The information and inspiration you will get from this book is priceless. You will probably come back and get more for family and friends so you won't have to share yours!

5.0 out of 5 stars Loved it!! Great inspiration for making my own cards, January 18, 2009
This review is from: The Encyclopedia of Greeting Card Tools & Techniques (Hardcover)
I absolutely LOVE this book and it is a welcome addition to my current book collection. These cards are more than just crafts; many are works of art that I wouldn't hesitate to frame and hang in my home. The photography is especially beautiful and the cards and techniques provide great ideas for making my own cards. I can't wait to check out other books by Miss Pickering Rothamel.

This wonderful book by Sue Pickering Rothamel includes hundreds of cards and descriptions of many techniques to inspire your own greeting-card and paper-craft work and play. Because Sue includes cards from designers across the country, you get many different aesthetic and design approaches. It's a really nice resource to turn to when you need a great card idea!

5.0 out of 5 stars Informative and Beautiful!, January 17, 2009
This review is from: The Encyclopedia of Greeting Card Tools & Techniques (Hardcover)
I was given this book as a gift and was very impressed with how easy it was to find and use the information in it! I brought this to class and went through it to help my 6th graders find ideas for cards they were making for a project. I think they spent more time looking through the book than actually working on their cards! The art teacher at our school borrowed this and it took her THREE WEEKS to get it back to me!. She commented that it was so inspiring to her and just beautiful to look at - and she said she learned a few things! This one is a definite must-have!

This is a beautiful book packed with everything one needs to know to make extraordinary greeting cards. There is even a useful section on envelope construction which has tables of all the sizes & types of envelopes. Susan Pickering Rothamel is a great teacher & artist who makes everything look doable. This book would make a great Christmas present for anyone who loves paper crafting either a newbie or an experienced crafter.

This review is from: The Encyclopedia of Greeting Card Tools & Techniques (Hardcover)
I got this from the library but I will soon order from Amazon. This book is wonderful. I like to create online cards similar to the cards that she has in the book. The pictures are very detailed.

Definitely the book to keep as a reference.
